This article traces the origins and development of the dispute between the Messenger Newspaper Group and the NGA (1982), including the use of the Employment Acts by the company. It then goes on to discuss the wider implication of the dispute for UK industrial relations.

In recent years there has been a substantial rise in the number of people in Britain retiring before the normal statutory pensionable age. This article attempts to explain this development and examines some doubts about early retirement as a special employment measure.

The most controversial part of the 1984 Trade Union Act is concerned with trade union political funds. This article suggests that the proposals challenge a consensus on political funding which has existed since 1913 and which could result in developments which the Government, when drafting these proposals, may not have anticipated.

This article, based on a study of the introduction of electronic news gathering equipment into an independent television company, suggests that new technology can be a source of conflict and rivalry between different sections of the workforce.

Although much interest is being directed towards the study of cultural influences on management and organisation, little attention is given to the effect of these influences on workplace industrial relations.
