Abstract.The advances reached by using DNA polymorphisms (restriction fragment length polymorphisms) in blood group serology are demonstrated by means of the HLA system. The potentialities for various applications (e.g. better definition of alloantigens, association with diseases, paternity testing, forensic medicine or genetic counselling) are mentioned.

Abstract.Blood banks face significant problems supplying blood units compatible with erythrocyte antigens other than ABO and rhesus D. Abstract.If leukocyte‐ and platelet‐poor red cells have been processed and stored in closed bags, their delivery, especially on holidays, will be easy. The modified warm‐centrifuge method was applied to a quadruple bag prepared for such purpose. Red cells were processed in the first bag by the centrifugation of whole blood. The supernatant plasma was transferred to the second bag. A phosphate buffer in the third bag was introduced into red cells and diluted red cells were then incubated at 37 °C for 1 h in an inverted position. After centrifugation, the red cell phase below the buffy coat layer was isolated using a Biotest separation apparatus and stored in the fourth bag (containing a preservative with adenine, phosphate, glucose and 0.9% NaCl solution) for 28 days at 4 °C. Ninety‐eight percent of the leukocyte and 97% of platelets in whole blood unit were removed with a red cell recovery of 86%. Biochemical changes in stored red cells were similar to those of conventional buffy coat‐removed red cells suspended in the same preservative, except for rapid decreases in 2,3‐diphosphoglycerate levels. Since processing buffy coat‐removed red cells containing few leukocytes and platelets with the present method was simple and these units might be stored for over 14 days with minimum cell damage, we suggest that the present method is useful way of processing leukocyte‐and platelet‐poor red cel

Abstract:Heat treatment at 60°C for 10 h in solution (pasteurization) was introduced into the manufacturing process of antihemophilic cryoprecipitate (AHC) and factor VIII concentrates (F VIII) to reduce the risk of transmission of hepatitis to hemophiliacs. Since the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) may also be transmitted to hemophiliacs by antihemophilic plasma protein preparations, we have investigated inactivation of the AIDS virus HTLV III by pasteurization in AHC or F VIII and included in this study cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), poliovirus and vaccinia virus. Each of these viruses was efficiently inactivated by pasteurization although considerable differences were observed between the different viruses. HTLV III was rapidly inactivated, becoming nondetectable within 30–60 min. Abstract.Adult T cell leukemia associated antibody (ATLA‐Ab) positive persons were screened by indirect immunofluorescence (IF) testing. Their lymphocytes were collected from concentrated red blood cells (CRC), and cultured in vitro with and without phytohemagglutinin (PHA) for 10 days. The expression of ATL virus (ATLV) positive lymphocytes during the in vitro culture was then analyzed by IF assay using mouse monoclonal antibody ATL‐19 reactive to p19 core protein of ATLV. 97% of ATLA‐Ab positive CRC (36 cases) demonstrated ATLV positive lymphocytes after being cultured for more than 10 days with PHA, whereas, none of ATLA‐Ab negative CRC (22 cases) demonstrated ATLV positive lymphocytes. All of the 10 ATLA‐Ab positive CRC that were stored for 2, 4, and 7 days contained lymphocytes which expressed ATLV after in vitro culture, while 7 of 10 CRC stored for 14 days and only 1 of 10 CRCs stored for 20 days, expressed ATLV positive lymphocytes. Abstract.The epidemiology of infection with the recently discovered delta (δ) agent was assessed in Saudi Arabia from the prevalence of antibody to delta (anti‐δ) in 488 HBsAg‐seropositive subjects from various regions of the country. In the Riyadh area, anti‐δ was prevalent in 22.2% of chronic hepatitis B patients compared to 7.9% and 6.7% in active hepatitis B patients and HBsAg carriers, respectively. Anti‐δ was also prevalent in HBsAg carriers from A1‐Hafouf (5.3%) and Najran (9.6%), but no anti‐δ was detected in 40 HBsAg‐positive polytransfused thalassemics and in 145 HBsAg carriers from Jaizan and Khaiber. Abstract.Anti‐H antibodies from 2 homogeneous subgroups of H‐deficient individuals (Bombay and Réunion phenotypes) were studied for their specificity with regard to synthetic H oligosaccharides. It appears that Bombay individuals synthesize large amounts of both anti‐H type 2 and anti‐H type 1 antibodies, whereas Réunion individuals may possess strong anti‐H type 1 antibodies, but have only weak anti‐H type 2 antibodies in their serum. Abstract.Human as well as animal anti‐Lewis reagents were shown to have different binding patterns to synthetic structures chemically related to the Lewis epitopes. Two main types of cross‐reactions were found: (1) Cross‐reactions among type 1 Lewis epitopes (Lea, Leband Lewis disaccharide). This type of cross‐reaction among different type 1 structures was predominant in anti‐Leareagents (16 out of 18), although it was also present in some anti‐Lebreagents (4 out of 14). (2) Cross‐reactions of Leaand Lebwith their type 2 isomers X and Y. The Leb‐Y cross‐reaction was more frequent (7 out of 14) than the Lea‐X cross‐reaction (2 out of 18). The serological property of some anti‐Lewis reagents reacting with cord cells (‘Lex’) is also shown to be heterogenous although probably related to common features of the type 1 Leaand Lebepitopes and independent of

Abstract.A ‘new’, rare blood group antigen, Ola(Oldeide), is described. Only one Ol(a+) person was found among the 7, 151 blood donors tested. Examination of the family of the proposita revealed 10 additional Ol(a+) persons. The study indicated that Olais inherited as a Mendelian dominant character and segregates independently of the ABO, MNSs, P, Rh and Kidd blood group systems, of the ABH secretor genes, and of sex. Ol(a+) family members had depressed Rh antigens, while the Ol(a‐) members had Rh antigens of normal strength. The depression was particularly pronounced for the C and E antigens, less marked for the D antigen. Individual antisera differed in their ability to demonstrate the presence of the antigens.
