SummaryA new specific platelet antigen is described, detected by means of an agglutinin, present in the serum of a multiply transfused patient. The frequency of this platelet antigen in the Dutch population is 26.2%. The dominant Mendclian character of the antigen could be established. It could be shown that this new antigen is the allele of Zwa. The newly recognized antigen will accordingly be called Zwb.Zw is the first blood group system in platelets of which two alleles have been recognized.RésuméUn nouvel antigène spécifique de plaquettes est décrit; il est mis en évidence au moyen d'une agglutinine présente dans le sérum d'un patient polytransfusé. SummaryFive different methods of dissociating antibody from red cells were investigated, using131I‐labelled anti‐D. A method of dissociation at acid pH is described which will give 80% recovery of antibody. Summary1Sheep red blood cells and hemolysin were incorporated into agar and complement was allowed to diffuse from circular wells. Zones of hemolysis whose width depended on the concentration of complement were observed.2Sheep red blood cells and complement were incorporated into agar and hemolysin was allowed to diffuse from wells. The width of the hemolytic zones depended on the concentration of hemolysin.3Sheep red blood cells were incorporated into agar. SummaryWe have described an MN geneMU, which appears to produce M and U only but no N, S, or s. Ordinary genes that produce M produce also a weak N antigen. Genes that do not produce S or s usually do not produce U. We prefer on the basis of these results to think of anti‐U as having independent specificity rather than that anti‐U is anti‐Ss.RésuméNous avons décrit un gène MN:MU, qui semble produire du M et du U seulement, sans produire du N, S ou s. SummarySera from 135 newborn infants (group A, 102; group B, 22; group AB, 11) and from 11 foetuses were studied for their content of A and B substances. Specific blood group substance was demonstrated in the vast majority of cases. The concentration was largely lower in non‐secretors than in secretors, but the values showed considerable overlapping. The amount of A substance in group A infants was independent of the presence or absence of and‐A in the mother. The concentrations of A substance seemed to be a little higher in sera from infants of group A1than in sera from group A infants whose A subgroup could not be determined. The concentrations seemed to be lower than in adults.RésuméDes sérums de 135 nouveaux‐nés (groupe A, 102; groupe B, 22; groupe AB, 11) et de 11 foetus ont été étudiés quant à leur contenance en substances A et B. Des substances spécifiques de groupes ont pu être démontrées dans la grande majorité des cas. La concentration en était beaucoup plus basse chez les non secréteurs que chez les secréteurs, mais il y avait un chevauchement considérable des valeurs obtenues. La quantité de substances A chez les enfants de groupe A était indépendante de la présence ou de l'absence d'anti‐A chez la mère. Les concentrations en substances A semblaient être un peu plus hautes dans les sérums d'enfants de groupe A1que dans les sérums d'enfants de groupe A dont le sous‐groupe de A n'était pas déterminable. Bei A‐Kindern erwies sich der Gehalt an A‐Substanz als unabhängig von der Anwesenheit bzw. dem Fehlen von Anti‐A‐Antikörpern bei der Mutter. SummaryThe present paper reports an attempted evaluation of the effect of A and B blood group substances on the 7S fractions of anti‐A and anti‐B.The moderate amounts of substance present in A and B sera can reduce the titre of homologous 7S antibody. The sensitisation of red cells exposed to the action of 7S fractions of anti‐A and anti‐B is weakened in the presence of homologous blood group substance. This is assumed to be due to a competition between free blood group substance and the erythrocytic antigens, since it was found that the red cells after sensitisation and incubation with homologous blood group substance had the same antigen strength and osmotic fragility as the control red cells.The relation between the results and the conditions in ABO incompatible pregnancies is discussed.RésuméCe travail rapporte sur la tentative d'évaluer l'effet des substances de groupe A et B sur la fraction 7S de l'anti‐A et de l'anti‐B.Une quantité modérée des substances présentes dans les sérums A et B peut réduire le titre de l'anticorps homologue 7S. La sensibilisation d'érythrocytes exposés à l'action des fractions 7S de l'anti‐A et de l'anti‐B est diminuée en présence de substances de groupe homologue. Il semble que ceci est dû au fait qu'il y a compétition entre les substances de groupe libre et les antigènes érythrocytaires puisqu'il a été trouvé que les érythrocytes, après sensibilisation et incubation avec la substance de groupe homologue, avaient la même force antigénique et la même résistance osmotique que les érythrocytes témoins.Le rapport qui peut exister entre les résultats et les conditions que présentent les grossesses incompatibles ABO est discuté.ZusammenfassungIn der vorliegenden Arbeit wird über Untersuchungen über den Einfluß von A‐ und B‐Blutgruppensubstanzen auf die 7S‐Fraktionen von Anti‐A‐ und Anti‐B‐Seren berichtet.Die geringe in A‐ und B‐Seren enthaltene Menge an Gruppensubstanz vermag den Titer der homologen 7S‐Antikörper zu senken. Die Sensibilisierung von Erythrozyten mit den 7S‐Fraktionen von Anti‐A und Anti‐B‐Seren ist in Anwesenheit von homologer Blutgruppensubstanz abgeschwächt. Offensichtlich beruht dies auf Kompetitionseffekten zwischen der freien Blutgruppensubstanz und den Erythrozytenantigenen. ZusammenfassungEs wird berichtet über die Phänotypen‐ und Allelhäufigkeiten der Haptoglobin‐Serumgruppen, des Gc‐Faktors, zweier Gammaglobulin‐Serumgruppen sowie der Pseudocholinesterase‐Varianten in europäischen Populationen. Die Häufigkeiten der Hp‐, Gc‐, Gm‐ und Pseudocholinesterase‐Phänotypen stimmen gut überein mit den Erwartungswerten unter der Hypothese des Hardy‐Weinberg‐Gleiebgewichtes. Die Allelhäufigkeiten entsprechen den Werten in den bisher veröffentlichten Stichproben einiger anderer europäischer Gruppen. Die große Häufigkeit der atypischen genetischen Information für die Pseudocholinesterase in der Prager Stichprobe kann zufallsbedingt sein (geringer Stichprobenumfang).SummaryThe phenotype and gene frequencies of the following systems were studied in various European populations: haptoglobin groups, Gc factor, two gammaglobulin groups, and pseudocholinesterase variants. The observed frequencies of the Hp, Gc, Gm and pseudocholinesterase phenotypes agree well with the values expected according to the Hardy‐Weinberg hypothesis. The gene frequencies do not differ substantially from those found in samples from other European populations. The high frequency of atypical genetical information for pseudocholinesterase in the Prague sample can be due to chance (smallness of the sample).RésuméLes auteurs font rapport sur la fréquence des phénotypes et des allèles des groupes sériques haptoglobine, des facteurs sériques Gc, de deux groupes sériques des gammaglobulines ainsi que des variantes de la pseudocholinesterase dans les populations européennes. La fréquence des phénotypes Hp, Gc, Gm et pseudocholinesterase concorde parfaitement avec les valeurs prévues selon l'hypothèse de Hardy‐Weinberg. SummaryIf fresh human serum is examined in Immunoelectrophoresis with anti‐human complement serum two precipitation lines, i.e. β1C and β1E are formed. Experiments demonstrating that anti‐β1E antibodies are directed against C′4are described. Other experimental results show that β1E globulin is hydrazine sensitive just like C′4. The inactivation of C′4by hydrazine and also by antigen/antibody complexes results in cleavage of β1E globulin into two fragments (β1E1and β1E2), which show different electrophoretic mobility and apparently have no mutual antigenic relationship.RésuméSi le sérum humain frais est examiné par analyse immuno‐électrophorétique avec du sérum anti‐complément humain, on observe deux lignes de précipitation β1C et β1E. Des expériences démontrant que les anticorps anti‐β1E sont dirigés contre le C′4out été décrites. D'autres résultats expérimentaux démontrent que la globuline β1E est hydrazino‐sensible au même titre que C′4.
