SummaryThe Crosby blood is described, which has the previously obscure Rh antigen G (“CD”) but not C, D, or E. “Anti‐CD” is shown to be a specific antibody, anti‐G, against a distinct antigen G. That G is quite antigenic, and therefore of clinical importance, is evident from considerable past experience. It should be tested for, preferably with anti‐G (“anti‐CD”) in all Rh negative donors.RésuméDescription d'un sang Crosby qui contient l'antigène Rh G (“CD”) jusqu'ici mal compris, mais pas les antigènes C, D ou E. Grǎce à ce sang il est possible de montrer que le serum dit «anti‐CD» contient en réalité un seul anticorps spécifique, anti‐G, dirigé contre un antigene distinct G. SummaryA young man was given eleven units of group AB blood in error. He was eventually shown to be of group A. Two remarkable facets of the case were the absence of any serious reaction in the patient and the survival of a small and gradually decreasing number of group AB cells in the patient's circulation for a period of six weeks following the last transfusion of incompatible blood. The survival of these cells in the presence of demonstrable destructive antibodies is a proof of the heterogeneity of red cells and their specific antibodies.RésuméUn jeune home regoit par erreur 11 flacons de groupe AB alors qu'il est de groupe A, comme le montre un examen ultérieur. Ce qui rend le cas remarquable, c'est qu'il ne se produit aucune réaction grave et qu'on a pu mettre en évidence dans la circulation du malade, pendant les 6 semaines qui suivent la dernière transfusion incompatible, un petit nombre, lentement décroissant, d'hématies AB survivantes. Cette survie, en présence d'anticorps destructifs démontrables, prouve l'hétérogéneité des hématies et de leurs anticorps spécifiques.ZusammenfassungEin juuger Mann mit der Blutgruppe A erhielt irrtümlicherweise 11 Vollblutkonserven der Blutgruppe AB. Dabei wurden folgende zwei Eigentümlichkeiten festgestellt: Erstens zeigte der Patient klinisch keine nennenswerten Zeichen einer Unverträglichkeitsreaktion. Außerdem gelang es, während 6 Wochen in seinem Blut eine geringe, allmählich abnehmende Zahl von AB‐Erythrozyten nachzuweisen. Der Nachweis von AB‐Erythrozyten in Gegenwart von Anti‐B‐Anti‐körpern zeigt eindrücklich die Heterogenität der Erythroaytenpopulation

SummaryWe have reviewed our management of haemolytic disease of the newborn in Northumberland and Durham in the ten years 1948–1957.In particular we have considered the selection of cases for exchange transfusion, the need to repeat exchange transfusion, the techniques employed and the results obtained.We have considered the problem of this disease in relation to the family and have briefly considered the role and value of premature induction in those families with a bad previous history.RésuméLes auteurs ont analysé leur traitement de la maladie hémolytique du nouveau‐né dans les régions de Northumberland et de Durham pendant les 10 années de 1948 à 1957.Ils discutent en particulier les points suivants: indication pour l'exsanguino‐transfusion, nécessité d'exsanguino‐transfusion répétée, techniques employées et résultats obtenus.Ils ont aussi examiné le problème que pose cette rnaladie pour les familles touchées et discutent brièvement la valeur que peut avoir l'accouchement prématuré dans les familles avec des antécédents défavorables.ZusammenfassungAuf Grund von in den Distrikten Northumberland und Durham in den Jahren 1948–1957 gesammelten Erfahrungen wird zum Problem des Morbus haemolyticus neonatorurn kritisch Stellung genommen. Summary1An analysis was made of 352 cases of leukemia with regard to age, race, sex, and blood group.2In this sample, which included 92 pediatric cases, the predominant type of leukemia wasacute lymphocytic.3The distributions of ABO and Rh blood groups were as expected except for an increase of group O subjects inmonocytic leukemia.4For each type of leukemia, the sex ratios were calculated with regard to the age groups primarily affected: a) Inacute lymphocytic(103 cases) males predominated in the 5–14 age group; b) Inchronic lymphocytic(91 cases), there was a statistically significant increase in males; c) Inacute myelocytic(25 cases), males also appeared to predominate, especially in the over‐50 age group; and d) Inchronic myelocytic(80 cases), females predominated in the under‐60 age groups, while in the over‐60 age groups, males were more numerous. Inmonocytic(44 cases) and instem cell(9 cases) leukemias, no definite pattern of age or sex distribution could be established.5While the above results may serve to indicate certain trends, the findings should not be considered conclusive because of the smallness of the sample.Résumé1352 cas de leucémie ont éth analysés par rapport à l'ǎge, la race, le sexe et le groupe sanguin.2Parmi ces malades, dont 92 étaient des enfants, le type prédominant de leucémie était la leucémie lymphocytique aiguë.3La distribution des groupes ABO et Rh était telle qu'on pouvait s'y attendre sauf pour un excès de sujets de groupe O dans la leucémie monocytique.4Pour chaque type de leucémie, la distribution des sexes fut calculée en prenant en considération les ǎges particulièrement touchés: a) en leucémie lymphocytique aiguë (103 cas) les garçons prédominaient dans le groupe de 5–14 ans;b) en 1. lymphocytique chronique (91 cas), il y avait excès signscatif d'hommes; c) en 1. myélocytique aiguë (25 cas), il semble qu'il y eǔt aussi prédominance d'hommes, surtout dans le groupe de plus de 50 ans; d) en 1. myélocytique chronique (80 cas), il y avait excbs de femmes dans le groupe de moins de 60 ans, tandis que dans le groupe de plus de 60 ans, les hommes étaient plus nombreux. En 1. monocytique (44 cas) et en 1. de cellules primitives (9 cas), il ne fut pas possible de trouver une repartition d'ǎge ou de sexe particulière.5Les résultats indiquent certaines tendances, mais il ne faut pas considérer les conclusions comme définitives à cause du petit nombre de cas examinés.Zusammenfassung1) 352 Leukämiefälle wurden im Hinblick auf Alter, Geschlecht und Blutgruppen der Patienten ausgewertet.2) Im vorliegenden Krankengut, welches 92 kindliche Fälle enthält, wurde der akute lymphozytäre Typ am häufigsten beobachtet.3) Die Häufigkeitsverteilung der ABO‐ und der Rh‐Blutgruppen lag im Bereiche der Norm. Einzig bei den Monozytenleukämien dominierte die Blutgruppe O.4) Für jeden Leukämietyp wurde unter Berücksichtigung des Alters die Verteilung auf die beiden Geschlechter ermittelt: a) beim akuten lymphozytären Typ (103 Fälle) dominierten in der Altersstufe 5–14 Jahre die Knaben, b) bei der chronisch lymphozytären Form (91 Fälle) fand sich eine statistisch gesicherte Häufung beim männlichen Geschlecht, c) beim akuten myelozytären Typ (25 Fälle) dominierten besonders in der Altersstufe jenseits 50 die Männer, d) bei der chronischen myelozytären Form (80 Fälle) dominierten in der Altersstufe unter 60 die Frauen; im höheren Alter dominierten die Männer, e) bei der Monozytenleukämie (44 Fälle) und der Stammzelleukämie (9 Fälle) fand sich kein signifikantes Überwiegen des einen der beiden Geschlechter.5) Obschon sich aus dem vorliegenden Untersuchungsgut gewisse Schlußfolgerungen ableiten lassen, so

SummaryThe incidence of anti‐A and anti‐B haemolysins in 90,185 blood samples is reported. There is a slight but significantly higher incidence in civilian blood donors than in donors of H. M. Forces.The effect of the donor's age, sex, past history of blood donations, or geographical and seasonal incidence did not appear to account for this observed difference in incidence, or for the great variation noted at successive donor sessions.The life history of anti‐A and anti‐B haemolysins was also studied.RésuméLa fréquence d'hémolysines anti‐A et anti‐B dans 90,185 échantillons de sang est donnée. Celle‐ci est plus grande chez les donneurs de sang civils que chez les donneurs de l'armée, mais la différence, quoique sigdcative, n'est que 1égère. Cette différence ne semble pas ětre due à l'influence de l'ǎge, du sexe, ou du nombre antérieur de saignées du donneur, ni à des facteurs géographiques ou saisonniers. Bei zivilen Blutspendern wurden Isohämolysine etwas häuiufiger gefunden als bei den Angehörigen der Armee.Das Alter und Geschlecht der Spender, die Anzahl ihrer früheren Spenden, ihr Wohnsitz sowie die Jahreszeit der Spenden vermochte die unterschiedliche Häufigkeit des Vorkommens von Isohämolysinen in den beiden Bevölkerungsgruppen nicht zu erklären. SummaryA case is presented of sensitization to the Rh antigen D which had persisted for 46 years.
