Abstract.The whole blood and plasma viscosities have been evaluated in a patient with cold hemoagglutinin disease at different temperatures and at different shear rates. At 37 and 42 °C, whole blood viscosity values, regardless of the shear rate applied, resulted to be correspondent to the hematocrit value (31%). The values observed were similar to those noted in a patient with chronic bleeding anemia and an approximately equivalent hematocrit (33%). The same was true for plasma viscosity. At 32 °C, whole blood viscosity, regardless of the shear rate, resulted to be higher than expected. The values observed were similar to those noted in a normal subject with a clearly higher hematocrit value (44%) and definitely higher than those noted in the chronic anemia patient. On the contrary, plasma viscosity remained unchanged. These studies indicate that in cold hemoagglutinin disease, red cell aggregation and piling are capable of increasing blood viscosit

Abstract.Serological studies on a patient whose red cells are polyagglutinable due to T activation have demonstrated concomitant T activity of the separated leukocytes and platelets. Normal leukocytes and platelets are not T active, but activation can be inducedin vitroby treatment with neuraminidase or with Pneumo‐coccus type III filtrate. Abstract.By incorporating whole Rh(+) red cells in an agarose plate and adding a small amount of purified125I anti‐D immunoglobulin as a tracer to standards and samples, a radioelectroimmunoassay (REIA) of anti‐D immunoglobulin was possible. Abstract.The rate of cord erythrocytes sedimentation in 1.5% polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) solution was investigated. Of 70 infants showing accelerated sedimentation rate, 49 had signs of hemolytic disease. Rh incompatibility did not affect the sedimentation rate. Infectious diseases might cause a slight increase in the rate of sedimentation. The test was found to be very sensitive. It could detect ABO incompatibilities even in absence of marked bilirubinemia. Furthermore, positive identification of incompatibilities were obtained in ABO‐HDN cases where both direct and indirect Coombs tests were negative. High correlation was noted between anti A and B titer of maternal sera and the accelerated sedimentation of newborn red blood cells. Abstract.A simple method for the collection of peritoneal cells from small laboratory animals is described. Peritoneal exudates were induced by either caseinate or glycogen, and the cells were retrieved through a closed system. The technique permitted repeated studies on individual animals and yielded consistently sterile cell suspensions.

Abstract.Polytransfused patients are exposed to a variety of antigenic stimuli which may eventually trigger autoimmune reactions. The relation of scrum complement to the occurrence of various antibodies has been investigated in a group of 75 polytransfused thalassaemic patients. The incidence of the antibodies studied was as follows: anti‐HBs 77%, anti‐Gm 64%, rheumatoid factor 31%, antinuclear 13%, anti‐smooth muscle 47%. Anti‐parietal cell, anti‐thyroid and anti‐kidney were only rarely found and antimitochondrial antibodies were never detected. Total hemolytic complement was low in 6 and incidentally decreased in 21 patients. A positive correlation was found between low serum complement and presence of rheumatoid factor. The high incidence of anti‐smooth muscle antibodies seems to be unrelated to

Abstract.HL‐A antigen and gene frequencies of 206 unrelated adults living in the cities of Caracas and Maracaibo have shown that this heterogeneous Venezuelan population sample possess 11 specificities of the first (LA) HL‐A series and 15 specificities of the second (Four) series. HL‐A2, HL‐A9, HL‐A5 and W5 showed frequencies higher than those observed in Caucasoid populations. The most frequent haplotypes were 2, W5; 2, 5; 9, 12; 2, 12 and 2, X2. No outstandingly high value for gametic association between the alleles of the 2 HL‐A series was observed, but haplotypes formed by antigens with dissimilar frequencies in Caucasoids, Negroids and American Indian tribes have shown statistically significant D values. Genetic distance calculated using the HL‐A system alone showed that this population is closer to the average Caucasoid and Negroid populations tested at the 5th International Histocompatibility Workshop than to 2 American Indian tribes living in the

Abstract.A family is reported in which the parents' mating is of the ‘double back‐cross’ type with respect to theSw, LuandSegenes. The inheritance of these genes in the children shows, with reference to a possible linkage between Sw and the two other loci, four non‐recombinants and three recombinants (or vice versa). Abstract.This paper describes anti‐C4b(ii) antisera which agglutinate cells from cases of autoimmune haemolytic anaemia, cold‐acquired haemolytic anaemia, and certain test cells, using the antiglobulin test. Abstract.Two examples of Bombay Oh blood were found in siblings of a Sudanese family. They belong to a tribe of Arab and Negro extraction. This is the first report of this rare blood group in people of Arab or Negro origin.
