AbstractAfter bone marrow grafting, severe unexplained thrombocytopenia and granulocytopenia may complicate the post‐graft recovery of the patient. The present study has shown the presence of antibodies to platelets and granulocytes of donor origin in recipients of both allogeneic and autologous bone marrow grafts. In the case of autografts, such antibodies are by definition autoantibodies, and similar antibodies after allografting may also have an autoimmune origin. It is likely that this is the result of transient immune system imbalance, common to both allo‐ and autografts, in the early post‐graft period. AbstractIn order to determine the efficiency of Imugard IG500 filters in producing leukocyte‐poor blood (LPB), 109 units of red cell concentrates were processed using cold (4°C) or room temperature saline solution without the application of pressure to the blood bag. The results obtained in terms of red blood cell recovery, white blood cell removal, residual white blood cells, and free hemoglobin in the supernatant of the filtered units are comparable to those processed with the IBM 2991. LPB processed without pressure application to the blood bag and room temperature saline solution can be rapidly, efficiently and safely prepared in any size blood bank/transfusion service. Abstractα1‐Proteinase inhibitor has potential therapeutic value in patients with chronic deficiency (which can lead to emphysema) and in acute adult respiratory distress syndrome. Pasteurization (10 h, 60°C) can reduce the risk of hepatitis B; and addition of stabilizers to the inhibitor helps prevent the loss of biological activity which occurs during pasteurization. Denaturation during heating at several temperatures was studied, using high pressure liquid chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and elastase inhibitory capacity to measure the extent of denaturation. The presence of 0.5Mcitrate increases the Arrhenius‐type activation energy 3‐fold, and the enthalpy of denaturation is increased by 3.5 kJ/mol (15 kcal/mol). The onset temperature of the endotherm is increased by more than 10°C. The inhibitor is further stabilized by sucrose (0.5 g/ml). In the presence of both citrate and sucrose, samples of α1‐proteinase inhibitor retained almost full biological activity following pasteurization for 10 h at 60°C; the heating conditions used to destroy hepatitis B infectivity of other plasma

AbstractThe I‐i– phenotype was found to be a familial character upto three generations in a large Indian family having 93 Members. 15 members showed highly depressed Ii antigens while 6 of the members had partial depression of the Ii antigens on their red cells. AbstractA method is described for the production of mouse monoclonal antibodies to HBsAg. 4 clones produced antibodies directed at theaand one at theddeterminant of HBsAg. These antibodies were conjugated to horse radish peroxidase and used in an Elisa for the detection of HBsAg in donated blood. Antibody C10 produced conjugate which rendered the Elisa as sensitive as a commercially obtainable immunoradiometric assay with which it was compared. Conditions for this assay were optimised and it may be used as a rapid (1 h) test for detecting HBsAg‐positive blood.
