Abstract.Aggregation and adhesion of stored platelets were studied by a modified Wright technique. Comparisons of platelet rich plasma collected in ACD solution were made with and without aggregating agents, and at storage temperatures of 5°C, 24°C and 37°C. Platelets showed a loss of response to 0.5 μg ADP/ml, collagen and agar after storage for 4–6 h at the three temperatures with the greatest loss at 37°C and the least change at 5°C. The response to 5μgADP/ml also was best maintained at 5°C. After 6–8 h of storage at 5°C. there was some decrease in free (single) platelets after rotation in the absence of aggregating agents, with a marked decrease after 48 hours storage. With storage at 24°C and 37°C, decrease in single platelets after rotation was not demonstrated during the first 24 h. A response to 5 μg ADP/ml was maintained for more than a week with the 5°C preparations. Acidification diminished the response to ADP for the first few days of storage and also depressed platelet aggregation and adhesion in the absence of aggregating agents on prolonged storage. The results of thisin vitrostudy would appear to correlate with the loss of hemostatic effect of stored platelets on transfusion. The sustained response to 5 μgADP/ml at 5°C suggests that this may be the best temperature for short term storage, although there is less spontaneous aggregation of platelets at the end of 24 h with 24°C storage. Abstract.A group B variant, lacking B antigen on the red cells, but secreting small amounts of B substance in the saliva is described. Family investigation showed both parents and three sibs to be normal B. Among six children no normal or abnormal B occurred. It is discussed whether the B variant is due to mutation of the B gene or to the effect of a recessive suppressor gene.

Abstract.A powerful cold auto anti‐I has been found that is strongly inhibited by hydatid cyst fluid and inhibited to a varying extent by all of the 181 human saliva samples tested. The investigation showed that the inhibition effect was specific for I and that water soluble I blood group substance must be responsible. No correlation could be found between the concentration of I substance in the saliva and the presence of ABH, Lewis or Sda substances. The amount of salivary I substance secreted appears to be a constant feature of the individual. Abstract.To explain the occurrence of a genetically determined polymorphism of 6‐PGD in man, dimerent genetic models have been proposed. A model assuming the presence of a single gene locus with different alleles opposes a model in which 2 loci are considered. In an attempt to clarify these conflicting interpretations, an investigation was undertaken in which a comparison of the 6‐PGD isozyme patterns of various human cell nnd tissue types was mnde. For this purpose three different 6‐PGD phenotypes found in man were used: the usual type (AA), the common variant (AB) and the Canning variant (BB). The results obtained are, in genetic terms, explained by a one‐locus model. Most decisive were the results obtained from nucleated red cells (extraction from bone marrow) compared to those of enuclented erythrocytes.
