SummaryA considerable number of blood group antigens can be detected in dry bloodstains, but it is a difficult job which can only be undertaken by experienced workers.If the quality and quantity of the bloodstains are optimal, results are exeunt. But as the amount of dry blood available is rarely sufficient to be tested for all the antigens which can be detected, it is usually advisable to restrict the search to antigens of high identification value, e. g., antigens present in the blood of a suspected person but not in that of the victim, or vice versa.The most difficult task for the expert is to define the value of the opinion he gives in an individual case. Such questions as: Which antigens should be looked for? How far can the failure to demonstrate a certain antigen be trusted ? can only be answered by studying the case thoroughly and by having a large experience of this type of examination.ZusammenfassungEs ist heute möglich, in trockenen Blutflecken eine große Anzahl von Blutgruppenantigenen nachzuweisen. Die Bestimmungstechnik ist jedoch schwierig. Deswegen sollten Blutfleckenuntersuchungen nur in spezialisierten Laboratorien durchgeführt werden.In günstigen Fällen, d. h. wenn der Fleck ausreichende Mengen yon gut konservierten Erythrozyten enthält, gelingt es, zuverlässige Ergebnisse zu erzielen. Nur in seltenen Fällen reicht die angetrocknete Blutmenge aus, um alle oben erwähnten Antigene zu bestimmen. Es ist deshalb zweckmäßig, zunächst diejenigen Antigene zu bestimmen, denen im betreffenden Fall eine besondere forensische Bedeutung zukommen könnte, da sie z. B. beim Opfer fehlen und beim fraglichen Täter vorkommen.Es ist für den Experten nach wie vor schwierig, die Grenzen seines Untersuchungsberichtes abzustecken und sich in der Wahl der Antigene festzulegen. SummaryFrom an investigation of the iron metabolism of 297 voluntary donors it has been shown that after ten bleeds significant differences may appear on comparing male and female donors. In about 22 per cent of the latter an increase of the unsaturated iron binding capacity was noted, associated with a reduced iron saturation.Determination of the haemoglobin content alone is insufficient for the demonstration of this disturbance. The risk of a latent sideropenia makes it desirable to consider prophylactic measures in females who have been bled ten times. For the present, a reduction in the frequency of donations for women to once a year would seem the procedure to be recommended.RésuméLe métabolisme du fer chez 297 donneurs de sang a été étudié et l‘on a observé qu'après 10 saignées il peut se produire des diffénces significatives entre hommes et femmes. Chez environ 22 pour cent des femmes on a trouvé une augmentation de la capacité d'absorption du fer allant de pair avec une réduction de la concentration effective de fer.La détermination du taux d'hémoglobine ne suffit pas à elle seule pour révéler ce dérangement. II faudrait donc combattre par des mesures prophylactiques le danger d'une sidéropénie latente, chez les femmes qui ont été saignées 10 fois. SummaryThe specific inhibition of anti‐C, ‐D, ‐E, ‐Luaand ‐Lubsera by four ribonucleic acid derivatives ‐ cytidine sulfate, adenylic acid, cytidylic acid and uridylic acid ‐ is described. These substances had no inhibitory effect on any other antisera with which they were tested. It is reasoned that these inhibitors combine with the antibody by virtue of their similarity to the antigen, leaving no free antibody to effect agglutination. Their involvement in the structure of these antigens is postulated as well as the first demonstration of specificity attributable to ribonucleic acid in other than microorganisms.RésuméQuatre dérivés de l'acide ribonucléique ‐ le sulphate de cytidine, l'acide adénylique, l'acide cytidylique et l'acide uridylique ‐ se sont avérés capables d'inhiber l'anti‐C, ‐D, ‐E, ‐Luaet ‐Lub. Ces substances n'avaient aucun pouvoir inhibiteur contre les autres anticorps examinés sous ce rapport. Les auteurs pensent que ces inhibiteurs s'unissent à l'anticorps inhibé en vertu de leur ressemblance avec l'antigène homolope, et qu'ils ne laissent point d'anticorps libre de produire une agglutination. Außer den 5 erwähnten Isoantikörpern wurden keine anderen Blutgruppenantikörper durch diese 4 Verbindungen gehemmt. Es ist naheliegend anzunehmen, daß diese 4 Verbindungen wegen ihrer chemischen Verwandtschaft mit den betreffenden Blutgruppenantigenen sich mit den Anti‐körpern spezifisch binden, so daß nach Absättigung der Antikörper die Erythrozytenagglutiation ausbleibt. Die Untersuchungen zeigen, daß diese 4 Ribonukleinsäurederivate offenbar wesentliche Bausteine der erwähnten Antigene des Rh‐ und Lutheranblutgruppensystems darstellen. SummaryThe antigenic structure of human leukocytes has been studied by means of humans leukocyte agglutinins. It has been confirmed that leukocytes contain antigens which are not present in erythrocytes and that at least four antigens are distributed among normal leukocytes. Since a very limited immunization may give rise to leukocyte agglutinins reacting with a high percentage of leukocytes, some leukocyte antigens probably are of frequent occurrence.By absorption experiments it has been demonstrated that some leukocyte agglutinating sera contain mixtures of agglutinins of different specificity and that normal leukocytes, leukaemic lymphocytes and leukaemic granulocytes have antigens in common. Finally it is pointed out that leukocyte groups cannot be explained by a simple antigenic system determined by a single pair of allelomorphic genes.RésuméLa structure antigénique des leucocytes humains a été étudiée à l'aide d'agglutinines anti‐leucocytaires humaines. II a pu être dé‐montré que les leucocytes contiennent des antigènes qui ne se trouvent pas chez les hématies, et qu'il existe au moins quatre antigènes propres aux leucocytes normaux. Puisqu'il suffit d'une immunisation restreinte pour produire des leuco‐agglutinines qui réagissent avec un haut pourcentage de leucocytes, il semble que certains antigènes leucocytaires soient de haute fréquence.A l'aide d'absorption on a pu montrer que certains sérums contiennent un mélange de leuco‐agglutinines de spécificité différente et que les leucocytes normaux, les lymphocytes leucémiques et les granulocytes leucémiques ont des antigènes en commun.Ces études indiquent enfin que les groupes leucocytaires ne peuvent pas être expliqués par l'hypothèse d'un système antigénique simple régi par une seule paire de gènes allélomorphes.ZusammenfassungDie Antigenstruktur von menschlichen Leukozyten wurde mit menschlichen leukozyten‐agglutininhaltigen Seren untersucht. Da schon ein schwacher Antigenstimulus genügt, um die Bildung von Leukozyten‐agglutininen auszulösen, ist anzunehmen, daß gewisse Leukozyten‐antigene eine weite Verbreitung aufweisen.Auf Grund von Absorptionsversuchen gelang es zu zeigen, daß einzelne Leukozytenagglutinine ein Antikörpergemisch mit verschiedener Spezifität darstellen. SummaryIn a previous report, a new family blood factor, designated as Bea, was reported. It was present in 7 of 11 members of the family, including the husband and three children. The antibody was found in the blood of a woman who was sensitized first by a transfusion of blood from her husband, and subsequently by a pregnancy. Two later pregnancies terminated in stillbirths, which showed the characteristic anatomic changes of hemolytic disease of the newborn. Bea‐positive blood was injected into two male volunteers, not members of the family. Both showed a good antibody response. This indicates that the Berrens factor is antigenic in man. The first volunteer produced in addition anti‐hr′(c) in a low titer. Be5was antigenic ally more potent than hr′(c). The immunologic and practical implications of the findings were discussed, and possible future approaches of investigation were outlined.RésuméLes auteurs ont décrit, dans une communication antérieure, un nouvel antigène érythrocytaire familial, nommé Bea. Get antigène était présent chez7des 11 membres de la famille, y compris le mari et trois enfants. L'anticorps se trouvait dans le sérum de la mère qui avait été immunisée par une transfusion de sang de son man et, plus tard, par une grossesse. Deux grossesses ultérieures résultèrent en des enfants mort‐nés, qui préentaient les symptômes anatomiques caractéristiques de la maladie hémolytique du nouveau‐né. Du sang Beapositif fut injecté à deux volontaires qui n'étaient pas membres de la famille. Tous deux montrèrent une bonne production d'anticorps. Ces faits démontrent que le facteur Berrens est antigénique chez l'homme. Le premier volontaire produisit en outre de l'anti‐hr′ (anti‐c) B bas titre. Beas'avéra donc plus fortement antigénique que hr′ (c). Ces observations sont discutées du point de vue immunologique et pratique, et la ligne que devra suivre l'étude future de ce cas est esquissée.ZusammenfassungIn einer früheren Arbeit wurde über ein neues Familienantigen, welches als Beabezeichnet wurde, berichtet. Dieses Antigen konnte bei 7 von 11 Familienangehörigen nachgewiesen werden. Im engeren Familienkreis war es beim Vater und dessen 3 Kindern nachweisbar. Der Antikörper wurde im Blut der Kindsmutter gefunden. Die Isoimmunisierung war bei dieser Frau die Folge einer Transfusion mit Blut des Ehegatten. Anschließend hatte sie eine Bea‐inkompatible Schwangerschaft. Zwei weitere Schwangerschaften endeten mit Totgeburten, welche die pathologisch‐anatomischen Zeichen eines Morbus haemolyticus neonatorum aufwiesen. Bea‐positives Blut wurde zwei männlichen Individuen, die nicht dieser Familie angehörten, eingespritzt. Beide bildeten kräftige Anti‐Bea‐Antikörper. Der eine dieser beiden Männer bildete außerdem niedertitrige Anti‐hr′ (c)‐Antikörper. Der Faktor Beaist offensichtlich ein kräftigeres Antigen als der Rhesusfaktor hr′ (c). SummaryA serum is reported which has anti‐k (anti‐Cellano) specificity and is active as a saline agglutinin at temperatures ranging from 4° to 37° C. and can be blocked by an incomplete anti‐k serum.Its specific reactivity has been used to demonstrate variations in the Kell blood factor system.The antibody titer in the donor of this serum has remained unchanged during the 21 months in which it has been followed.RésuméDescription d'un sérum contenant anti‐k (anti‐Cellano) en forme d'agglutinine complète, active à des températures allant de 4° à 37° et capable d'être bloquée par un anti‐k incomplet.A l'aide de ce sérum un échantillon de sang fût trouvé qui représente peut‐être une nouvelle variante dans le système Kell.Le titre de l'anti‐k dans ce sérum n'a point varié pendant les 21 mois que le donneur était en observation.ZusammenfassungEs wird über ein Serum berichtet, welches Anti‐k (Anti‐Cellano) ‐Antikörper enthielt, die im NaCl‐Milieu von 4°‐ 37°C wirksam waren und die durch Zusatz von inkompletten Anti‐k‐Antikörpern spezifisch blockiert werden konnten. SummaryA saline extract ofUlex europaeusseeds has been used to differentiate between apparent A1and A2red cells in 284 instances, and between A1B and A2B cells in 94 instances. It has also been used to detect H‐substance in salivas of 3144 individuals.Because of frequent failure to detect A2B cells, the Ulex reagent proved inferior to presently available anti‐A1agglutinins for routine use. However, the finding that certain A cells were agglutinated by both anti‐A1and anti‐H reagents indicates once again that A1‐A2differentiation is not always clear‐cut.About 24% of the salivas tested did not contain H‐substance. Among the other 76%, larger amounts of H‐substance tended to occur in the salivas from individuals of blood groups O and A2.RésuméUn extrait salin de grainesd'Ulex ouropaeusa été employé pour différencier entre les sous‐groupes A1et A2chez 284 individus, et entre les sous‐groupes A1B et A2B chez 94 individus.
