Summary1A slight difference is found between the plasminogen content of plasma and serum, indicating that little plasminogen is actually adsorbed to the fibrin during the formation of a clot.2Plasminogen‐poor clots are lysed at the same rate as plasminogen‐rich clots by plasma with an increased level of blood‐activator. This evidence suggests a new hypothesis for the mechanism by which preformed clots are dissolved: plasminogen and activator are both adsorbed from the surrounding plasma to the clot, whereupon conversion to plasmin occurs.3It is demonstrated that urokinase and tissue‐activator act in plasma according to the same mechanism as the blood‐activator, whereas streptokinase acts in a different way.4It is concluded that urokinase might be a much more effective thrombolytic agent than streptokinase.Résumé1On trouve une légère différence entre la quantité de profibrinolysine se trouvant dans le plasma et dans le sérum indiquant qu'un peu de profibrinolysine est absorbée sur la fibrine pendant la formation du caillot.2Les caillots pauvres en profibrinolysine sont lysés de la même manière que les caillots riches en profibrinolysine. SummaryA normal rabbit serum was incidentally found which agglutinated, up to a dilution of1:128, rabbit blood group G erythrocytes sensitized by incomplete anti‐G sera of rabbit origin. A similar agglutinating activity was then demonstrated in the sera of 2.7% of apparently normal rabbits. The serological properties of the agglutinating factor were quite analogous to those of the factor previously described in human sera, called anti‐antibody. The rabbit anti‐antibody resisted heating up to 56°C and was associated with γ‐β‐globulin electrophoretic fractions of the serum. It could not be neutralized by any whole rabbit serum or by the γ‐globulin fraction of pooled rabbit serum. However, it was readily absorbed by immune complexes composed of any antigen and the corresponding antibody of rabbit origin. On the basis of experiments presented, the rabbit anti‐antibody could be considered as a specific agent capable of combining with rabbit immune globulin modified in the course of serological reaction but not with the free normal or immune rabbit γ‐globulin. The possible antibody character of the serum factor under investigation has been discussed.RésuméPar hasard un sérum de lapin normal a été trouvé qui agglutinait jusqu'à une dilution de1:1288 des érythrocytes de lapin de groupe G sensibilisés par un sérum incomplet anti‐G de lapin. Une activité similaire a été démontrée dans les sérums de 2,7% de lapins apparemment normaux. Les propriétés séologiques du facteur agglutinant sont analogues à celles du facteur précédemment décrite dans les sérums humains qui a été appellé anti‐anticorps. L'anti‐anticorps de lapin résiste à la chaleur jusqu'à 56° et se trouve dans la fraction électrophorétique des γ‐β‐globulines. Il ne peut être neutralisé par aucun sérum total de lapin ni par la fraction des γ‐globulines d'un «pool» de sérum de lapin. Toutefois, il est absorbé par des complexes immuns composées de n'importe quel antigène et d'anticorps correspondant de lapins. En se basant sur ces expériences, l'anti‐anticorps de lapin peut être considéré comme un agent spécifique capable de se combiner avec des immuno‐globulines de lapin modifiées au cows de réaction sérologique mais incapable de se combiner avec les γ‐globulines libres normales ou immunes. La possibilité a été discuté que le facteur sous investigation est un anticorps.ZusammenfassungZufälligerweise wurde ein normales Kaninchenserum entdeckt, welches Kaninchenerythrozyten der Blutgruppe G, welche mit inkompletten Anti‐G‐Kaninchenantikörpern sensibilisiert waren, bis zu einer Verdünnung von1:128 agglutinierte. Eine ähnliche Agglutinationseigenschaft wurde bei 2,7 % aller untersuchten gesunden Kaninchen gefunden. Die serologischen Merkmale dieses Agglutinationsfaktors entsprechen weitgehendst jenem seinerzeit in menschlichen Seren gefundenen und als Anti‐Antikörper bezeichneten Faktor. Der Kaniuchen‐Anti‐Antikörper war bei 56°C thermostabil. Er gehörte zur elektrophoretischen γ‐β‐Globulinfraktion des Serums. Er wurde weder durch natives Kaninchenserum noch durch die aus gepooltem Kaninchenserum hergestellte γ‐Globulinfraktion neutralisiert. Hingegen war er leicht absorbierbar durch jeden Antigen‐Kaninchenantikorper‐Komplex. SummaryRabbits were immunized with membranes, prepared either from native or from trypsin‐treated beef erythrocytes. The immune‐sera agglutinated the trypsintreated erythrocyte in high, the native erythrocytes in a low titer. Some of the immune‐sera produced with trypsin‐treated erythrocytes exerted no or only an insignificant agglutination on native erythrocytes. These immune‐sera revealed a significant difference against the others, produced towards native erythrocytes, in hemagglutination with beef erythrocytes digested with graded amounts of trypsin. The conclusion was drawn that the surface of the beef erythrocytes is covered with a loose and ductile protein layer which has a weak but specific antigenic property. Methods were developed to study the topography of antigens in the membrane of erythrocytes.RésuméDes lapins ont été immunisés avec des membranes prépariés à partir d'érythrocytes bovins natifs ou traités par la trypsine. Les immunsérums agglutinaient les érythrocytes traités par la trypsine à un titre élevé et les érythrocytes non traités a un titre bas. Certains immunsérums préparés avec des érythrocytes traités à la trypsine ne réagissaient pas ou bien réagissaient très peu avec les érythrocytes natifs. Ces immunsérums présentaient de réelle différences en les comparant avec les antisérums produits par des érytbrocytes natifs, dans les réactions d'hémagglutination d'érythrocytes de baeufs digérés avec des quantités de trypsine graduiés. La conclusion à tirer est que la surface d'érythrocytes de bœufs est recouverte par une fine couche de protéines qui a des propriétis antigéniques faibles, mais spécifiques. Des méthodes ont été développies pour étudier la topographie des antigènes de la membrane érythrocytaire.ZusammenfassungKaninchen wurden mit Membranen immunisiert, die teils aus nativen, teils aus trypsinbehandelten Rindererythrocyten hergestellt waren. Einige Immunsera, die mit Membranen der trypsinbehandelten Erythrocyten produziert wurden, gaben eine Haemagglutination ausschließlich mit trypsinbehandelten Erytlwocyten. Die Membranen, die aus nativen Erythroryten hergestellt wurden, produzierten hingegen Antikörper, die auch die nativen Rindererythroeyten agglutinierten. Es konnte die Schlußfolgerung gezogen werden, daß die Oberfläche der nativen Rindererythrocyten mit einer lockeren Proteinschicbt bedeckt ist, die an und für sich ein schwaches, aber spezifisches Antigen ist. SummaryTests with anti‐Xgaon 419 unrelated Caucasians, mostly British, are here reported: they bring the total tested in the Blood Group Research Unit up to 1008. Of 517 males 62.9 per cent were Xg(a +) and of 491 females 89.4 per cent were Xg (a+): the gene frequencies derived therefrom areXga0.651 andXg0.349.A further 131 Caucasians families bring the total number tested up to 181. Analysis of the unrelated and of the family data consolidates the evidence for the X‐linkage of the Xg blood group system.The hope that the Xg groups would support the theory of Lyon has not yet been realized.RésuméDes tests pratiqués avec l'anti Xgachez 419 caucasiens, pour la plupart britanniques sont reportés ici; ils portent le nombre total des personnes testées par le «Blood Group Research Unit» à 1008. SummaryA woman of group B was found to have a B antigen slightly weaker than normal. She has anti‐B in her serum which agglutinates normal B cells but not her own. She secretes a little B substance in her saliva. Her sister has a similar red cell antigen but no detectable anti‐B, and she also secretes a little B substance. The daughter of the fist woman is of group A1B, with a very weak B antigen, much weaker than that of her mother and aunt. She is a non‐secretor of ABH. The sameBgene must be present in all three genotypes but expresses itself much more strongly when combined with anOgene than with anA1gene.RésuméOn a trouvé chez une femme de groupe B un antigène B un peu plus faible que la normale. Elle a de I'anti‐B dans son sérum qui agglutine les érythrocytes B normaux, mais pas les siens. Elk secrète un peu de substance B dans sa salive. SummaryThe serum Ri, diagnostic for the rheumatoid factor, has been used to study prozones. It has been observed that almost all rheumatoid sera have prozones and these are usually prominent in sera with low titres. The prozone may be increased by reducing the antibody coating of the erythrocytes and by absorption with pooled gamma globulin. The prozone can be removed by dilution with saline. It is concluded that these prozones are not due to the simultaneous presence of antigen and antibody.The Ri serum has been used for Gm(a) and Gm(x) typing by reducing the antibody coating of the red cells when using rheumatoid sera as anti‐Gm reagents. An anti‐Gm(a) serum from a normal donor has been used with heavily sensitized cells and clear‐cut results obtained.A new method of Gm typing sera from patients with rheumatoid arthritis is described.RésuméLe sérum Ri, servant au diagnostic du facteur rhumatolde, a été utilisé pour étudier les phénomènes de prozone. Il a été observé que presque tous les sérums rhumatoïdes présentent un phénomène de prozone qui est d'autant plus accentué que le titre est bas. Ce phénomène de prozone peut être augmenté en réduisant la quantité d'anticorps sensibilisant les érythrocytes et par absorption par un pool de gamma‐globulines. Le phénomène de prozone peut être supprimé par dilution en solution physiologique. Ceci prouve que ces phénomènes de prozone ne sont pas dus a la présence simultanée d'antigène et d'anticorps.Le sérum Ri a été utilisé pour la détermination des facteurs Gm(a) et Gm(x) en réduisant la quantité d'anticorps sensibilisant les érythrocytes lorsque des sérums rhumatoides ant été utilisés commc réactifs anti‐Gm. Un sérum anti‐Gm(a) d'un donneur normal a été utilisé avec des érythrocytes fortement sensibilisés avec lesquels des résultats clairs et nets ont été obtenus.Les auteurs décrivent une nouvelle méthode de détermination des Gm chez des patients atteints de polyarthrite chronique évolutive.ZusammenfassungDas Rhesus‐Serum Ri wurde zur Untersuchung van Prozoneneffekten bei Rheuniafaktorhaltigen Serum benutzt. Es zeigte sich, daß fast alle Rhenmaseren Prozonen aufweisen; diese sind bei niedertitrigen Seren besonders ausgeprägt. Die Prozonen können durch Herabminderung der Antikörperbeladung der Erythrozyten verlängert werden; dasselbe gelingt durch Absorption mit gepooltem Gammaglobulin. Die Prozonen können durch Verdünnung mit Kochsalzlösung beseitigt werden. Es ist anzunehmen, daß diese Prozonen nicht auf der gleichzeitigen Anwesenheit von Autigen und Antikörper beruhen.Bei uur geringgradiger Sensibilisierung der Erythrozyten konnte das Ri‐Serum zur Gm(a) und Gm(x)‐Bestimmung mit Rheumaseren verwendet werden. Ein Anti‐Gm(a)‐Serum eines gesunden Spenders gab auch bei starker Beladung der Erythrozyten mit Ri‐Serum einwandfreie Resultate.Eine neue

SummaryThe use of the passive haemagglutination technique as an indicating system of the antiglobulin consumption test is described. This indicating system consisting of a) tanned erythrocytes sensitized by globulin preparations possessing the globulin property of animal antibodies, and b) a corresponding antiglobulin serum, enables the detection of animal antibodies by antiglobulin consumption. The applicability of this variant was proved by means of anti‐kidney antibodies of Masugi sera.RésuméL'application de la technique d'hémagglutination passive comme système révélateur de la consommation d'antiglobuline est décrite. Ce système révélateur, composé de globules rouges tannées et sensibilisées par une globuline, qui correspond à la propriété antigènique des anticorps animaux, et d'un sérum antiglobulinique, facilite la détection des anticorps antitissulaires des animaux. La preuve de I'utilité de cette variation était fournie par la détection des anticorps anti‐rein des sérums de Masugi.ZusammenfassungDie Verwendung der «Passiven Haemagglutination» als Indikatorsystem des Antiglobulin‐Konsumptionstestes wird beschrieben. Tannierte Erythrocyten, die mit einer Globulinpräparation sensibilisiert sind, welche sich zu der Globulineigenschaft tierischer Antikörper identisch verhält, und ein Antiglobulinserum gegen diese Globulinpräparation hauen das Indikationsystem auf und ermöglichen es, tierische Gewebsantikörper mit dem Antiglobulin‐Konsumptionstest nachzuweisen.
