Abstract.Erythrocytic membranes from blood group A individuals were assayed for A antigen using a quantitative hemagglutination inhibition technique. The membranes were then extracted for lipid and glycoprotein. Although some A antigen was usually found in the glycoprotein fraction, most of the activity was in the lipid fraction. The sum of A antigen activity in the lipid, glycoprotein, and membrane residue fractions only occasionally was equal to the A activity in the erythrocytic ghosts. However, when certain lipid preparations with little or no A antigen (enhancement factors) were added to the glycolipid fractions, the amount of A antigen demonstrated was usually greatly increased. Under these conditions, the sum of the fractions often was much greater than the A antigen demonstrated in erythrocytic membranes. This suggests that the organization or arrangement of A antigenic determinants in the red cell membrane may not always permit a stoichiometric reaction with anti‐A molecule

Abstract.One or more differences between donors and recipients were found in polymorphic red blood cell antigens and enzymes in each of 56 bone marrow transplant sibling pairs. These results identify those polymorphic traits which are potentially most informative for detection of donor cells in a recipient following transplantation.

Abstract.A method for demonstrating granulocyte cytotoxins using a modified microdroplet dye exclusion technique and cytochalasin‐B‐treated cells is described. Cytochalasin‐B‐treated granulocytes were reacted against 223 sera from multitransfused pregnant and renal transplant patients. Incidence of granulocyte cytotoxins was 11.2%. Analysis (2times2 contingency tables) of the reactivity of GCT + sera showed highly significant (p<0.001) positive associations among 5 sera and a significant (p<0.001) negative association with another serum. Abstract.Substitution of trypsin for Konglutinogen‐activating factor (KAF) in the procedure for cleaving C3d from C3‐C3b substrate produced a relatively heterogeneous low‐molecular‐weight fraction (C3d‐Tryp) which differed in a number of ways from the KAF‐mediated cleavage product (C3d‐KAF). The differences were demonstrable by agar and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis,125I‐labelling, content of immunoreactive125I‐labelled C3d, inhibition of anti‐complement antiglobulin reagents and rabbit immunization. Abstract.To assess two modifications of the platelet factor 3 (PF3) test for platelet antibody detection, an analysis of test conditions was performed with normal test material (serum, plasma, globulin fraction), defined HLA‐specific, complement‐fixing antisera and a quinidine‐induced antiserum. It was shown that, under standardized conditions, the PF3 test revealed known platelet antibodies confirming earlier results. Its reproducibility and, to a lesser degree, its sensitivity were inferior to platelet complement fixation. In contrast, the test did not permit the reliable determination of platelet autoantibodies in sera of 89 thrombocytopenic patients including 36 cases of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Abstract.To evaluate the applicability of the14C‐serotonin release test for the demonstration of platelet autoantibodies, normal test material (sera, plasmas, globulin fractions), HLA‐specific complement‐fixing platelet antibodies and aggregated human γ‐globulin (aγG) were tested in comparison to sera (plasmas, globulin fractions) of 101 thrombocytopenic patients including 46 cases of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Whereas defined immunological stimuli (HLA antibodies, aγG) were detected with satisfactory precision, platelet autoantibodies could not be demonstrated. Abstract.BS II lectin, a second hemagglutinin isolated fromBandeiraea Simplicifoliaseeds, agglutinated the red cells from 11 patients manifesting the ‘acquired B’ antigen phenomenon. The results of serological studies indicate that this lectin has specificity for the type III polyagglutinable receptors rather than for the ‘B‐like’ antigens present on ‘acquired B’ red cells.Two other blood samples which did not possess ‘acquired B’ antigens were also found to react with BS II lectin. Abstract.The investigation covered 457 ‘healthy’ HBsAg carriers detected following a screening by CEP. HBsAg in the sera of these subjects were subtyped by ID and titrated by CEP.
