Abstract:From January 1975 to December 1978, 19,140,169 units of blood were collected by the American Red Cross at 57 regional locations. Each unit was tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) by a single commercial radioimmunoassay test system. A total of 15,954 donations were reported reactive, representing a rate of HBsAg reactivity of 0.83/ 1,000 units tested. The rate during 1975 was 0.94/1,000 units tested, decreasing to 0.71/1,000 units tested in 1978 (p<0.005). The prevalence of HBsAg among first‐time donors was 2.08/ 1,000 during 1977 and 1978, 2.7 times higher than that calculated for repeat donors (0.77/ 1,000 donors). Abstract:Cold and warm B and T cell antibodies have been investigated following blood transfusion in patients waiting for a kidney transplant. 18 out of 28 patients were sensitized after a single transfusion: half of them presented a B‐warm pattern and the other half either a T‐warm or a B‐cold pattern. Several sera collected after one transfusion were absorbed with pooled platelets. All three T‐warm sera have become negative after absorption. Out of 21 B‐warm sera, 6 remained B‐warm, 3 became B‐cold and 12 were negative after absorption. There was no difference in strength between the B‐warm sera which were absorbed and those which resisted to absorption. Dilution studies showed that sera followed a similar trend: they convert from T‐warm to B‐warm and B‐cold patterns. Abstract:30 platelet transfusions were administered to 9 thrombocytopenic patients with acute leukemias. Using the Raji cell radioimmunoassay, the serum concentration for circulating immune complexes (CIC) were determined immediately before and 10–12 h after each transfusion therapy. Elevated serum concentrations for CIC were present in 14 of the pretransfusion samples. After platelet transfusion therapy, a significant (p0.05) than the mean for the 16 transfusion studies in which the pretransfusion values for CIC were normal. Abstract:Paraproteinaemia was detected by agarose gel electrophoresis in 13 out of 3,800 apparently healthy blood donors of an Italian district. None of the subjects with a serum M component developed overt B cell malignancy over a prolonged period of observation. The incidence of paraproteinaemia was higher than that reported from previous surveys of similar populations of blood donors in other European countries, possibly due to the sensitivity of the technique adopted for the screening investigation. The main implications of the detection of monoclonal immunoglobulin abnormalities are briefly discussed with particular reference to the possible indications for routine screening of blood donors for the presence of paraproteins.

Abstract:In the course of routine studies on lectins it was observed that serological activity whether agglutinating or haemolysing is present in all the parts of plants including roots. It is suggested that the serological activity of plants is controlled by some factor, probably genetic, which causes the formation of lectins in somatic and germ cells.
