Abstract.With the use of endless belt fluid electrophoresis, these studies confirm previous reports of two cell populations in PMFP having different mobilities. Our method shows two clearly separated bands, while with the microelectrophoresis method a distinctly bimodal distribution is reported. The abnormal (A) cells show a 33‐ to 42‐percent reduction in mobility and a 47‐ to 48‐percent reduction in sialic acid as compared with standard cells. The serologically normal (N) cell population, on mixture with standard cells and subjected to electrophoresis, exhibits no increase in streak width indicative of increased electrophoretic heterogeneity. This is consistent with the findings in the preceding report of no serological abnormalities in the (N) cells. Results of hematological studies, red cell isozyme determinations and assays of glycolytic enzymes activity were not significantly different between the two cell populations.These observations lead us to suggest that the basic abnormality in PMFP (A) cells (Tn transformation) represents a point mutation involving a single genetic step in erythrocyte membrane glycoprotein biosynthesis. A block in the transfer of terminal D‐galactose to N‐acetylgalactosamine in a substantial proportion of (A) cell heterosaccharides is postulated to be common to all of the serological and biophysical aberrations. This would be consistent with the observed reduction of T, NVG, NHmn(also MHmn), electrostatic charge, sialic acid, and increased ‘saline agglutinability’ in incomplete antisera. Abstract.The frequency of isolated IgA deficiency was determined in a healthy population of 15,200 volunteer French blood donors. The screening was performed either by inhibition of passive haemagglutination or by double diffusion analysis in gel. The results obtained with the two methods were concordant. In the Parisian population, the incidence of selective IgA deficiency characterized by a serum level below 0.5 IU, was found to be 1/3,040. This index is lower than that reported by most other investigators: 1/300‐1/3,000. These discrepancies depend on the type of population chosen for inquiry. Abstract.The discovery of a blood giving the reactions C‐D‐E+G+ has provided an opportunity for a study of the reactions of such cells with different anti‐C+D sera.The cells were found to adsorb antibody, even from anti‐C+D sera that showed negative reactions in direct agglutination tests. This led to the conclusion that there is considerable quantitative variation in the amount of G antigen represented in red cells of different Rh phenotypes so that qualitative misinterpretations may be possible.Though the cells of the propositus showed a normal double dose of the c antigen, and though the family study yielded unequivocal evidence that the products of the gene complex r″Ginclude c as well as G and E, it was subsequently shown that typer″Gr cells react weakly with a few especially powerful anti‐C reagents. Abstract.A simple directin vitromethod for studying delayed hypersensitivity in man using linear migration of peripheral blood leukocytes in capillaries is described. It eliminated the use of expensive chambers, conserved at least 50% of the antigen, saved time in setting up the test and enabled easy reading of linear migration within the capillaries with discrete end point when compared with the conventional method using chambers and planimetric measurement of the area of migration.
