SummarySemi‐quantitative methods for measuring the potency of serological reactions are reviewed and particularly compared with the cell counting method of Wilkie and Becker. The Wilkie‐Becker method is highly reproducible and recognizes the importance of the mass action aspects of the hemagglutination reaction first emphasized by Wurmser.The paper details the method, its limitations, the environmental factors influencing hemagglutination assay curves and the theory of the probit bioassay on which the technique is based.The use of the method in studies of hemagglutination inhibition and suggestions for future applications are also considered.RésuméLes méthodes semi‐quantitatives permettant la mesure de la puissance des réactions sérologiques sont passées en revue; on les compare plus particulièrement avec la méthode de numération cellulaire de Wilkie et Becker. SummarySerologic and immunochemical analyses of Axbloods have defined a probable specific antibody to the Axantigen in group O serum. Anti‐Axactivity was found to be in 19S (β2M, γ1A) and β2A(γ1A) globulin fractions but not in the 7S (γ2) globulin of human group O sera.RésuméLes analyses immuno‐chimiques et sérologiques des sangs Axont permis de déceler un anticorps spécifique contre l'antigène Axdans les sérums de sang de groupe O. SummaryLymphocytes obtained from patients with chronic leukemia readily take up enterobacterial antigens (O antigen and the common antigen described by Kunin). As a result of this modification, the lymphocytes are specifically agglutinated by the corresponding bacterial antibodies. Intravenous immunization of rabbits with antigenically modified lymphocytes results in the production of bacterial antibodies. Lymphocyte‐attached common antigen engenders the formation of the corresponding antibody, although the soluble antigen fails to do so.RésuméLes lymphocytes provenant de patients atteints de leucémie chronique fixent les antigènes entéro‐bactériens (antigène O et l'antigène commun décrit par Kunin). Le résultat de cette modification est que les lymphocytes sont agglutinés spécifiquement par l'anticorps bactérien correspondant. L'immunisation intraveineuse de lapin avec ses lymphocytes modifiés antigéniquement provoque la production d'anticorps bactériens. SummaryThe crossreaction of anti‐N with type M erythrocytes that are U‐positive, and the failure of anti‐N to crossreact with type M cells that are U‐negative, have been confirmed. Several possible explanations to account for this crossreaction have been discussed, one of which considered N determinants as all or part of a base or precursor material subject to alteration byMgenes, perhaps, in the form ofMdependent terminal structural groupings. Summary157 randomly sampled individuals and 71 families with 182 offspring have been examined for the pattern of reactivity of red blood cells in the immune‐adherence haemagglutination test (IAH).Four main types of reactors could be discerned: strong, weak, zonal and negative. The technique of examination permits a clear‐cut division into positive and negative reactors. A further subdivision of the positive group is suggestive, but its definition is not yet certain. The four types were distributed at random between the sexes and the mating types. These types of reactivity were distributed at random between the sexes, mating types and the ABO and Rh blood groups.The segregation of positives and negatives among the offspring of the respective mating types was compatible with the hypothesis that negativity was due to an autosomal recessive gene. Family studies indicated the hereditary nature of these subtypes. However, the genetic mechanism involved could not be elucidated. It is felt that improvement of the technique of identification of the different types is required before further progress may be made.No association was found between the immune‐adherence types and ABO or Rh (D) blood groups. Preliminary analysis performed upon the material, divided into positive and negative reactors only (without subdivision of the positive group) suggested a possible linkage between immune‐adherence haemagglutination and the ABO locus.Résumé157 individus pris au hasard et 71 familles avec 182 descendants ont été examinés en ce qui concerne le degré de réactivité des érythrocytes au test d'hémagglutination d'immuno‐adhérence (IAH).On a pu mettre en évidence quatre types de réactions: les réactions fortes, les réactions faibles, les réactions de zone et les réactions négatives. La technique d'examen a permis une division tout‐à‐fait claire entre les personnes donnant des réactions négatives et les personnes donnant des réactions positives. Une subdivision supplémentaire est intéressante, mais sa définition précise n'est pas encore certaine. Les quatre types de réactions se distribuent au hasard en ce qui concerne le sexe et le genre de couple. Ces types de réactions se distribuent au hasard parmi les sexes, les types de couple et les antigènes de groupe sanguin ABO, et Rhésus.La ségrégation parmi les descendants positifs et négatifs des couples respectifs est conforme à l'hypothèse que la négativité est due à un gène recessif autosomal. Des études de familles ont démontrés la nature héréditaire de ces sous‐types. Malgré tout, le mécanisme génétique n'a pas pu être élucidé. Il semble nécessaire que les techniques d'identification de ces différents types doit être améliorées avant que d'autres investigations puissent être pratiquées.Il n'y a pas d'association entre le type d'immuno‐adhérence et les groupes sanguins ABO et Rhésus. Des analyses préliminaires pratiquées sur du matériel où les personnes présentant des réactions étaient divisées en réactions positives et négatives seulement (sans subdivisions du groupe des personnes positives) suggéraient un « linkage » possible entre l'immuno‐adhérence et le locus ABO.ZusammenfassungEs wurden 157 unausgewählte Individuen sowie 71 Familien mit 182 Nachkommen auf das Verhalten ihrer Erythrozyten im Immunadhärenz‐Hämagglutinationstest (IAH) untersucht.Es wurden vier Hauptreaktionstypen beobachtet: stark positive, schwach positive, solche mit Zonenphänomenen und negative. Die gewählte Untersuchungstechnik erlaubt eine eindeutige Scheidung in positive und negative Reagenten. Eine weitere Differenzierung in der positiven Gruppe erscheint wahrscheinlich; ihre Umgrenzung ist aber noch unklar. Die vier Reaktionstypen zeigten eine gleichmäßige Verteilung innerhalb der Geschlechter, den verschiedenen Paarungen sowie den ABO‐ und Rh‐Blutgruppen.Die Verteilung der positiven und negativen Reagenten unter den Nachkommen der verschiedenen Paarungstypen spricht dafür, daß die Negativität auf ein autosomales rezessives Gen zurückzuführen ist. Allerdings gelang es nicht den Erbgang eindeutig sicherzustellen. Dies dürfte erst möglich werden, falls es gelingt, die Methodik der Identifikation der einzelnen Typen wesentlich zu verbessern.Zwischen den Immunadhärenztypen und den ABO‐ und den Rh (D)‐Blutgruppen wurde keine Beziehung gefunden. SummaryThe serum factors Gm (a), Gm (b), Gm (x), and Gm‐like have been determined in 477 adults with Rheumatoid Arthritis, 168 with Ankylosing Spondylitis, and 118 with other chronic rheumatic diseases. The incidence of Gm (a+) in R.A. and the miscellaneous group does not differ from that in a normal population, but is lower than normal in A.S. Gm (b) frequencies are similar in all three groups to those of normal subjects. Gm (x+) is markedly higher in R.A. patients with a positive Waaler‐Rose test.The relation between the Gm groups and the presence of anti‐Gm in the serum of patients with R.A. has been investigated; it is interesting that anti‐Gm (x) was found only in Gm (x‐) sera. Anti‐Gm‐like was found in the serum of 10 patients, all of European origin.RésuméLes facteurs sériques Gm (a), Gm (b), Gm (x) et Gm‐like ont été déterminés chez 477 adultes atteints de polyarthrite chronique évolutive (PCE), chez 168 adultes atteints de spondyarthrite ankylosante et chez 118 patients atteints d'autres maladies rhumatismales chroniques. La fréquence du Gm (a+) dans la PCE et parmi les autres groupes ne diffère pas beaucoup de la fréquence que l'on trouve dans la population normale, mais est plus basse que la normale dans les cas de spondyarthrite ankylosante. Les fréquences du facteur Gm (b) sont semblables dans les trois groupes à celles que l'on trouve chez des sujets normaux. La fréquence de Gm (x+) est nettement plus haute chez les patients atteints de PCE avec un test de Waaler‐Rose positif.Le rapport entre les facteurs Gm et la présence d'anti‐Gm dans le sérum de patients atteints de PCE a été recherché. Il est intéressant de constater que l'anti‐Gm (x) n'a été trouvé que chez des sujets Gm (x‐). L'anti‐Gm‐like a été observé dans le sérum de dix patients, tous d'origine européenne.ZusammenfassungBei 477 erwachsenen Patienten mit rheumatoider Arthritis (R.A.), bei 168 Patienten mit ankylosierender Spondylitis (A.S.) sowie bei 118 Patienten mit anderen chronischen Krankheiten aus dem rheumatischen Formenkreis wurden die Gm‐Faktoren Gm(a), Gm(b), Gm(x) und Gm‐like bestimmt. Die Häufigkeit von Gm(a+) weicht in der Gruppe der R.A.‐Patienten sowie in der Gruppe gemischter rheumatischer Leiden nicht von derjenigen in der Durchschnittsbevölkerung ab. Bei A.S.‐Patienten ist sie hingegen geringer. Die Häufigkeit von Gm(b) ist in allen drei Gruppen etwa gleich und entspricht der Durchschnittshäufigkeit bei Gesunden. Die Häufigkeit von Gm(x+) ist bei R.A.‐Patienten mit positivem Waaler‐Rose‐Test deutlich größer.Im weiteren wurde die Beziehung der Gm‐Gruppen zur Anwesenheit von Anti‐Gm‐Antikörpern im Serum von Patienten mit R.A. untersucht. Es war bemerkenswert, daß Anti‐Gm(x) nur in Gm(x‐)‐Seren gefunden wurde.

Summary1The results of 32 matings between group i sheep support the hypothesis that group i sheep which have anti‐R in their sera are of the genotyper/r i/iwhereas those without anti‐R are of the genotypeR/‐i/i.2Group i individuals were produced from matings between sheep of group r. This suggests that the gene i in homozygous condition is epistatic tor.3Salivas from group i sheep inhibited both anti‐R and anti‐r to some extent. This inhibition was apparently independent of their genotype in respect of R and r. Such salivas did not inhibit anti‐H.Résumé1Les résultats obtenus chez 32 couples de moutons de groupe i confirme l'hypothèse que les moutons de groupe i qui ont un anti‐R dans leur sérum, sont de génotyper/r i/i, tandis que ceux qui ne possèdent pas d'anti‐R dans leur sérum sont de génotypeR/‐i/i.2Les individus de groupe i étaient issus de couples de moutons de groupe r.
