SummaryModern genetic concepts suggest that the sub‐genic units specifying the antigenic sites of the ABO blood group substances need not be truly allelic at the nucleotide level and that, therefore, intra‐genic recombination might be expected to occur and to be detectable. Four previously reported, though unexplained, pedigrees are discussed and are shown to be in agreement with the concept of anA2Bgene having the sub‐genic units specifying the A and B antigenic sites. Such a gene also offers an explanation of the pedigree in which Axand A2B blood groups are transmitted through a person of blood group A2B.Possible ways in which genetic information can be translated into mucopolysaccharide ABO blood group substances are discussed.RésuméDes conceptions génétiques modernes suggèrent que les unités sub‐géniques déterminant les sites antigéniques des substances de groupes sanguins ABO ne sont pas réellement alléliques au niveau des nucléotides et que, par conséquent, on peut s'attendre à une recombinaison intragénique détectable. Quatre pédigrees déjà précédemment décrits et inexpliqués sont discutés et semblent être en accord avec la conception selon laquelle un gène A2B a des unités subgéniques conditionnant les sites antigéniques A et B. Aus diesem Grunde wäre es durchaus möglich, daß innerhalb des Gens Rekombinationen vorkommen, die als solche auch erfaßt werden können. Vier früher mitgeteilte, unerklärt gebliebene Stammbäume werden diskutiert. Diese stehen in keinem Widerspruch zur Annahme, daß ein A2B‐Gen Untereinheiten aufweist, welche die verschiedenen A‐ und B‐Antigendeterminanten charakterisieren. SummaryThe H antigen specificity of human buccal epithelial cells, as defined by two anti‐H lectins,Ulex europaeusandCytisus sessilifolius, has been investigated by means of the mixed agglutination reaction and by inhibition of the mixed agglutination reaction with sugars.Buccal cells from secretor and non‐secretor individuals differ from each other in regard to their H receptors. At least one common H receptor exists on all human buccal cells, the structure of which is in part that of a glucoside. The buccal cells from all secretor individuals possess at least one additional H receptor. The H receptor present on secretor buccal cells alone is detected by an agglutinin present in the redissolved 70% ethanol precipitate ofUlex europaeusextract. This agglutinin is inhibited by L‐fucose and related sugars.RésuméL'antigène H présent sur les cellules épithéliales de la muqueuse buccale humaine mis en évidence au moyen de deux lectines anti‐H provenant l'une, de l'Ulex europaeuset l'autre duCytisus sessilifolius, a été recherché au moyen de la réaction d'agglutination mélangée et au moyen de l'inhibition de cette réaction par des sucres.Les cellules buccales de sécréteur et de non‐sécréteur se différencient les unes des autres en ce qui concerne leur récepteur H. SummaryThe finding of three Mgpositive Swiss persons by chance within a few months prompted the carrying out of serial tests with anti‐Mgon 6,530 Zürich blood donors: these yielded a frequency of Mgof 0.15 %. This contrasts strikingly with the negative results of over 105,000 similar tests performed in London and Boston.The MNMeSs groups of twenty‐one families were studied in which the mating type of the parents was (or could with practical certainty be assumed to be) Mg+ ×Mg‐, and which comprised a total of 51 children. The results were in accordance with the assumption, derived from the inheritance of Me in the original Gilfeather family, that the gene Mgis a co‐dominant allele ofMandN. The family studies also showed that the inheritance of Mgwas in every case controlled by aMgs gene complex which produced readily demonstrable s antigen.The difference in the frequency of Mgbetween the Swiss population, on the one hand, and that of England and the U.S.A., on the other, is discussed. The possibility of interrelationship between the families of the Mgpositive Swiss propositi is considered. This possibility is suggested by certain findings, but, owing to the lack of concrete evidence, it remains questionable.RésuméLa découverte de trois personnes suisses Mgpositives, découvertes par chance en quelques mois, nous a incités de pratiquer des tests en série avec un anti‐Mgchez 6530 donneurs de sang zürichois. Parmi cette population, la fréquence de Mgest de 0.15%. Ceci est en contradiction étonnante avec les résultats négatifs obtenus chez 105000 personnes testées à Londres et à Boston. Les groupes MNMgSs ont été étudiés chez 21 families où le type parental était (ou pouvait être estimé comme tel) Mg+ × Me‐ et qui comprenaient un total de 51 enfants. Les résultats étaient en accord avec la présomption du mode héréditaire de Mgobservé dans la famille originate Gilfeather selon lequel le gèneMgest un allèle codominant deMet deN. SummaryWhile determining the MN groups of Mgpositive persons, weak reactions between anti‐N and blood of typeMMgwere observed. Titration scores showed this N reactivity of Mgto be slightly stronger than that of M.The very rare genotypeMgsMgs was found in a newborn child. With selected sera, this child's MN group was M — N —, and in titration experiments its red cells gave a “double dose” of Mgand of s. These cells were agglutinated, in some instances quite strongly, by nearly all rabbit anti‐N sera. Absorption of such sera withMgMgcells abolished their capacity to agglutinateMMcells andvice versa, while absorption of the same sera withMgMgorMMcells substantially reduced their capacity to agglutinate N+ cells.The possible reasons for the reaction between anti‐N and the products of bothMand Mggenes are discussed.RésuméEn déterminant le groupe MN de personnes Mgpositives, on observe de faibles réactions avec l'anti‐N et les sangs de personnesMMg. SummaryThe first example of an M‐positive person with anti‐M is reported. Because her serum does not react with her own red cells, it is concluded that the red cells lack one of the M specificities present in nearly all humans who are M‐positive. The specificity that she lacks is named MA, and her phenotype, MaN. SummaryIn a northeastern Brazilian population with 30% Negro admixture, the frequencies of S‐s‐ alleles at the MNS locus areN* = 0.0189,M* = 0.0138, where the asterisk signifies that the reaction with anti‐U is not specified. Of 8 independent homozygotes, 4 reacted with anti‐U. This is greater than, but not significantly different from the proportions of U + and U‐ reported in American Negroes by Allenet al. (1963), and the pooled estimate is that 16% ofN* genes areNUand 5% ofM* genes areMU.After deleting parentage exclusions by other systems, the frequency of parentage errors among inferredN*andM*heterozygotes is shown to be 0.048±0.038, and the overall frequency of undetected parentage errors is 0.010±0.006. Neither estimate is significantly different from zero, nor is the racial phenotype of inferred heterozygotes significantly different from its expectation on the hypothesis that (almost) all inferred heterozygotes in this population are genuine, and not the result of extramarital parentage.No recombination was observed between MN and inferred S‐s‐ alleles in 180 gametes tested. As an explanation ofN* andM* “alleles”, the data clearly exclude an unlinked modifier (P<10‐44) or a linked modifier more than 1.3 crossover units from the MN locus. Following the conventional definition of a locus in human genetics,N* andM* may be accepted as alleles at the MNS locus.RésuméDans les populations du Nord‐Est brésilien comportant 30% de personnes de race noire, les fréquences des allèles S‐s‐ du locus MNS sont pourN* = 0.0189, pourM* = 0.0138 où l'astérisque signifie que la réaction avec l'anti‐U n'est pas spécifiée. (1963) bei amerikanischen Negern ermittelt wurde. Faßt man die vorliegenden Daten zusammen, so stellt man fest, daß 16% derN‐GeneNUund 5% derM*‐GeneMUsind.Nachdem auf andern Systemen beruhende Yaterschaftsausschlüsse eliminiert wurden, beträgt die durch Illegitimität bewirkte Irrtumswahrscheinlichkeit beiN*‐ undM*‐Heterozygoten 0,048±0,038. Die Gesamtfrequenz unentdeckter Vaterschaftsausschlüsse beträgt 0,010±0,006. Keine der beiden Schätzungen weicht stark von Null ab.
