Abstract.From the Immunodeficiency Cancer Registry, it has appeared that there is an increased frequency of neoplasia in individuals who have a selective absence of serum IgA. Approaching this question from another point of view, we have found that of 4,120 sera drawn in this cancer‐oriented hospital, 12 sera had a total absence of IgA and 3 additional sera had less than 10 mg/dl. The incidence of IgA deficiency in a cancer hospital is thus 1:342 or 1:273, which is statistically similar to that previously found for other patient groups studied in the USA (average of two studies, 1:418), but it is substatistically increased over the incidence of IgA deficiency found in normal blood donors (average of five studies, 1:1,677). Analysis of these sera by diagnostic categories showed that of 1,517 sera of patients with lympho‐proliferative disorders, 6 were IgA deficient (frequency 1:253), and of 249 sera of patients with gastrointestinal neoplasm, 2 were IgA deficient (frequency 1:125). We conclude that, in the absence of IgA, certain organ systems, the gastrointestinal and lymphoid tissue may be at increased risk for malignant change and that the protective, anti‐neoplastic role of IgA requires investig

Abstract.Anin vitroandin vivocomparison of nine commercial and noncommercial factor VIII preparations was made. These consisted of one lyophilized cryoprecipitate, four intermediate (IPC) and four high purity concentrates (HPC). Protein, fibrinogen, factor VIII complex, IgG, IgM and anti‐A and B alloagglutinins levels were measured. These three qualities of product were defined by two ratios: units of F VIII: C per mg of protein and per mg of fibrinogen. They were, respectively,<0.5 and3 in HPC. The F VIII:C/F VIII:AG ratio ranged from 0.3 to 0.6 and the F VIII: C/F VIII: VWF ratio was always lower than 1. Varying titers of alloagglutinins were found, unrelated to either IgG or IgM levels. Seven of these preparations were injected into several classical hemophilia A patients for treatment of minor hemorrhages. The peak of F VIII: C activity was always found 1 h postinjection. The F VIII: C recovery ranged from 80 to 140% and the half‐life from 8 to 15 h. No significant difference was found among these products and the clinical efficacy was

Abstract.From July 1, 1969, to June 30, 1977, 4,413 patients with acute viral hepatitis were admitted to Fairfield Hospital, Melbourne, of whom 1,129 (25.6%) had hepatitis type B. Only two of the four major subtypes of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) were detected, HBsAg/ ayw and HBsAg/adw, and of these HBsAg/ayw was present in 80.4% of cases. Over the 8‐year period, hepatitis B became more common in Melbourne and the proportion of patients infected with the ayw subtype increased from 75 to 91%. Abstract.65 normal, healthy people with a positive direct antiglobulin test (DAT) have been identified in a population of blood donors over a period of 14 years. 32 of them have been recalled for detailed study. A strong positive correlation with increasing age was noted, comparable to that seen in hospital patients with a positive DAT. No feature known to cause a positive DAT was identified in the healthy individuals, only 1 of whom went on to develop autoimmune haemolytic anaemia.
