Abstract.A papain‐bromelin‐polybrene antibody screening four‐channel Autoanalyzer system was developed using basic flow charts. Use of four different test cells as well as four different techniques and accelerated sampling rate made possible adaptation of automated screening methods to the routine needs of a transfusion service. Parallel manual and Autoanalyzer assays of 22,912 sera during a 12‐month period showed that performance of the apparatus was not outstanding with respect to some naturally occurring antibodies such as anti‐Lewis, anti‐P1, anti‐Luaand anti‐M. On the contrary, manually missed weak immune antibodies were well detected by the apparatus which showed a high sensitivity as well for many cross‐reacting and auto‐antibodies.Parallel screening of sera by both the machine and a simplified manual technique (saline, Coombs) using appropriate red cells appear to be a practical and reliable antibody‐screening policy. The problem of identification of ‘Autoanalyzer‐specific’ antibodies remains to be resolved in routine practice

Abstract.A quantitative haemagglutination‐inhibition method suitable for estimation of the concentration of blood group substance (BGS) A in saliva has been developed based on the quantitative haemagglutination method of Dybkjaer(1966). The coefficient of variation for estimation of BGS concentration in a given sample of saliva varied from 2 to 6%. The technique was used to quantitate the secretion of BGS A in different types of saliva from 12 young adult secretors. Sublingual saliva and secretions from the minor mucous glands (MMG) contained significantly more BGS (p<0.01) than did whole or submandibular saliva whilst parotid saliva contained negligible BGS. The sublingual and MMG secretions appear to contribute about 70% of the BGS in whole saliva, the remainder coming from submandibular saliva. Because different saliva collection conditions may result in different proportional contributions from the various salivary glands, quantitative studies on secretion of BGS in whole saliva are difficult to interpret and submandibular saliva would seem the secretion of choice for population and family studie

Abstract.A modified method for the production of IgG anti‐Rh by ion exchange chromatography is described. The resulting product represents unfragmented, immuno‐electrophoretically pure IgG with high relative antibody concentration. Since the anti‐complementary activity is insignificant with regard to the antibody concentration, the preparation is suitable for intravenous administration. Abstract.Total lipids, nonlipid residues obtained after lipid extraction, and mucoproteins prepared from the respective erythrocytes and sera were tested for haptenic activities in the bovine J, human A, and porcine A blood group systems. It is shown that the porcine A antigen resembles the bovine J antigen in 4 respects: both exhibit immuno‐logical cross‐reactions; both are found dissolved in the serum; the dissolved antigens show similar diversities of carriers; only the lipid‐bound antigens seem to be absorbed from the plasma onto the red cells. Abstract.Five different proteolytic enzymes were tested, partly in commercial concentrations, against selected lymphocyte samples. By this selected material the increased sensibility of ficin, which has already been proved by other authors, was verified, and by the rest of the enzymes, most of all by papain, higher grades of injury were proved in the cytotoxic test. Abstract.A weak B antigen has been found on the red cells of a healthy blood donor. His saliva contains B blood group substance. The mother is group A2B and a sibling is group B, both with strongly reactive B antigens, while the father is group O. The weak B phenotype has been named BHm.

Abstract.Extracts of mature ova fromSalmo trutta, Clupea harengusandRutilus rutilus, contain agglutinins for human erythrocytes. The agglutinins are insensitive to 2‐mercaptoethanol and EDTA and show differences in stability and agglutination reaction in differing pH environments. BothClupea harengusandSalmo truttaextracts strongly agglutinate human group B red cells and less strongly A1P and OP cells; A1pp and Opp cells are not agglutinated. Abstract.The red cell antigen, Cad, defined byDolichoslectin is so characteristic that one can always find free cells together with strong agglutinates even in the strongest reactors. The incidence of the antigen is roughly estimated to be 0.03% in Japanese populations, the number of the samples tested being over 50,000. The pedigree studies indicate that the antigen is inheritable as an autosomal dominant character, and that there is evidence against close linkage with the groups ABO, MNSs, Rh, Duffy and Kidd. The striking differences of incidence between the antigens Cad and Sdaare discussed.
