Abstract.A variant of blood group A, provisionally designated Ainn, that occurs in an overall frequency of approximately 1 in 6,000 in Finnish blood donors is described. Agglutination involving a very small number of erythrocytes was observable only microscopically, even with the most powerful immune anti‐A sera. However, potent anti‐A antibody eluates were produced from cells sensitized with both natural and immune anti‐A or anti‐A + B sera. Anti‐A1agglutinins were demonstrated in the sera of all cases, and the saliva of secretors contained H but no A substances. Comparative examinations and previously published descriptions of other established variants clearly indicated that this was not identical with the Abantu, Am, Ax, or Ae1phenotypes. Abstract.261 HB antigens were subtyped fordandy.In the healthy carriers, 63 were found to beadand 75 wereay.In the patients with acute hepatitis, 24 weread and33ay(6 wereadand 2ayin chronic hepatitis). Among haemodialyzed patients, 50 wereayand only 6 weread.In 2 of these renal patients, we found a true association ofadanday (ady).Thewandrdeterminants were detected in 63 of these 261 HB antigens. 61 werew(33ayw, 26adwand 2adyw), only 2 werewnegative (Iayrand 1adr).In the course of this study, several abnormalities: reactions of someaywith anti‐dsera, peculiar behaviour of an antiserum from Dakar which was responsible for the formation of spurs between someay(and threead)over all other HB antigens could not be explained by thewandrdeterminants. This and other observations (especially selected absorptions) led us to subdivide theayinto three categories (1, 2 and 3) and theadinto two categories (4 and 5). A sixth category consisted of the genuine association ofadanday (ady).The observation thatayof category 3 andadof category 5 behaved similarly in absorption studies and with the antiserum ‘Dakar’, led us to conclude that the commonadeterminant was heterogeneous and included 3 subdeterminants:al, a2anda3, of decreasing antigenic strength. The five categories observed were interpreted as follows: (1)aly, healthy carriers from Vietnam; (2)a2y, healthy carriers, niainly Caucasians, and all theaypatients; (3)a3y, healthy carriers, mainly Africans; (4)a2dthe great majority ofadcarriers and patients, and (5)a3d, only 3 cases (see text). Abstract.Nine patients given heat‐treated (60 °C, for 10 h) human plasma protein solution (Plasmanate, PPS) developed antibody against Australia antigen (Au antibody), while none of the patients manifested either Australia antigen (Au antigen) or clinical hepatitis. It is conceivable that Au antigen present in PPS was deprived of its infectivity but retained its antigenicity. Au antibody developed early in 7 of 9 patients after the first infusion. Abstract.The use of IEOP is described for screening blood donors to find plasma containing tetanus antitoxin suitable for fractionation. Preliminary results indicate that most recipients of tetanus toxoid are unlikely to have acceptable antitoxin levels for much longer than about three months after inoculation. A small number of recipients maintain acceptable levels even for many years without further known boosting. Such people can now be identified easily, among the 5% of all East Anglian donors who have antitoxin levels of at least 5 1U/ml.

Abstract.Pregnant cows can be successfully immunized with different proteins and subsequently deliver large volumes of potent antisera in their colostrum. An anti‐human immunoglobulin has been prepared in this way which is excellently suited for the demonstration of incomplete blood group antibodies of the IgG class. Abstract.A group of 38 patients with lymphomas (29 with Hodkin's disease and 9 with other lymphomas) and a control group of 27 healthy individuals were vaccinated with an influenza vaccine, containing influenza A Hong Kong virus. Eight patients (6 with Hodgkin's disease and 2 with other lymphomas) did not respond with a fourfold raise in titre or greater as measured by haernagglutination inhibition assay. In the healthy control group, everyone showed an adequate antibody response.In the patients, incapacity of antibody formation was not associated with cytostatic therapy, treatment with prednisone or the combination of the two, but a correlation was found with radiation therapy during the ‘immunization period’.HL‐A typing and determination of serum immunoglobulin levels were performed both in the patients and in the healthy controls. A significant difference in HL‐A12 frequency was found between patients with adequate antibody response to influenza vaccination (HL‐A12 frequency 13%) and those without demonstrable antibody formation (HL‐A12 frequency 62%). Abstract.These studies indicate that α‐galactose is the terminal and immunodominant sugar of the Pkdeterminant. Human anti‐Pkand the ‘anti‐Pk’ activity of salmon and trout protectins are strongly inhibited by α‐galactosyl groups of galactose, disaccharides and macromolecules, e.g. P1substance. Removal of a‐galactose from P1substance abolishes its ability to inhibit anti‐Pkantibody activity.Anti‐Pkantibody has a narrow spectrum for terminal a‐galactosyl groups of cell surface antigens defining those of Pkbut not those of B, P1or P2cells, while all these cells are agglutinated by the fish roe protectins. We suggest that anti‐Pkantibody selects a larger determinant than the terminal α‐galactosyl group and the full determinant is structurally different from those of B, P1and P2antigens. By contrast, fish roe agglutinins bind to a part only of the α‐galactosyl group,

Abstract.Anti‐Sp1was identified in the serum of an elderly woman following hemicolectomy, complicated by peritonitis. She had received 15 transfusions in the previous six weeks, and anti‐E and anti‐Kell were also present in her serum. The anti‐Sp1had a titer of 32,000 with a marked prozone at 4°C. After several surgical procedures, anemia necessitated transfusion. Abstract.The occurrence of Ag determinants on low density (LDL), very low density (VLDL) and Lp(a) lipoproteins was studied with the passive hemagglutination inhibition method. All Ag specificities found in LDL lipoproteins of a person could also be demonstrated in the plasma, VLDL and Lp(a) lipoprotein of this person. After delipidation of LDL with sodium deoxycholate, the Ag antigens a1and g could still be demonstrated in the apoprotein while the Ag antigens x and y could not.
