Abstract.An automated continuous‐flow hemagglutination inhibition (HI) method for hepatitis B antigen using purified HAA‐conjugated red cells has been developed in these laboratories and has been used to test 497 blood donors. For comparison, counter electrophoresis (CEP) and microtiter complement fixation (CF) tests were done concurrently. 14 samples were found to be HAA‐positive by all three tests. Abstract.Hepatitis B virus (HBV) strains among Israeli donors have been characterized for determinants d, y, w, and r. Of 60 consecutively positive donors, 78% had determinant y and 22% determinant d. Immigrants to Israel from North Africa, the Near and Middle East, and certain parts of Europe had almost exclusively determinant y of the d‐y pair. Among immigrants from North Central Europe, determinant y occurred less frequently; those from South Central Europe had an intermediate level. First‐generation Israelis of European background had the same frequency of determinant d as immigrants from Europe, suggesting the home as the most important site of transmission. Abstract.Two methods are described for the preparation of human prothrombin complex on a large scale. In the first method DEAE‐cellulose DE 52 is used as an adsorbent and in the second method DEAE‐Sephadex A‐50. The results obtained with both methods are compared. The DEAE‐cellulose method is an adaptation from a previously existing small‐scale to a large‐scale preparation. The DEAE‐Sephadex method is newly developed. The amount of DEAE‐Sephadex required for adsorption, the duration of adsorption and the influence of the temperature are examined. The behaviour of Hepatitis Associated Antigen (HAA) in both methods is tested and, it is argued, that by introducing an extensive washing the risk of transmitting serum hepatitis is considerably diminished. Abstract.The effects on human immunoglobulin of preparation by solvent fractionation and of storage under different conditions are described. Samples were examined by ultracentrifugation, electrophoresis and electrofocusing in polyacrylaniide gel, by gel chromatography and complement fixation. Changes under extreme or prolonged storage conditions were apparent in anticomplement activity before they were detected by other techniques. Abstract.HL‐A typing was performed in 22 potential kidney recipients, 35 parents and 87 siblings.Homozygosity for one or two HL‐A antigens was present in about half of the patients with a phenotypic incomplete HL‐A pattern. In 12 patients 23 HL‐A identical siblings were found.In one patient recombination of the paternal first and second locus of the HL‐A system was observed. Mixed lymphocyte reactions (MLR) were carried out with 3 sibs and an unrelated donor. A difference at the first HL‐A locus was accompanied by a weak mixed lymphocyte reactivity, while a difference at the second HL‐A locus gave rise to a strong MLR. Abstract.Lymphocytes from 150 unrelated individuals, 100 atopics and 50 lepers of the general population, mainly Mestizo, were tested for seven HL‐A antisera. The results found in the atopics showed a significant excess for HA‐7, and, taken as a whole, the distribution of HL‐A antigens was in this group more similar to the Caucasian component of the Mestizo population than to the Indians.
