Abstract.The titer of anti‐A and ‐B IgM antibody was tested in 57 sera from patients aged 65 years or more. 31 of these sera were also titered for the occurrence and titer of IgG antibody. All sera were found to have a low titer (2–64) of IgM antibody but 14 sera contained IgG antibody. Abstract.The serological characteristics of a highly purified α‐D‐galactosyl‐binding lectin, isolated from extracts ofBandeiraea simplicifoliaseeds, are described. These studies show that the lectin preferentially agglutinates group B red cells and in addition has the capacity to distinguish between group A1and group A2erythrocytes.Since the lectin is not absolutely specific for group B red cells, it is therefore unsuitable as an anti‐B blood typing reagent. Abstract.Concanavalin A binding experiments on trypsinized and nontrypsinized bovine red cells strongly indicate that the con A receptor and the A antigen are molecularly independent cell surface entities. Untrypsinized bovine red cells are not agglutinated by con A, although such cells do bind the lectin. Trypsinization of A‐positive cells causes increased binding of anti‐A antibodies, accompanied by clustering of the A antigen sites on the membrane. Following trypsinization additional con A is also bound, but the con A receptors are not seen to aggregate in the membrane. Abstract.The incidence of cytotoxic antibody at delivery in 91 immunised Rh(D)‐negative patients was significantly greater than in 348 non‐immunised Rh(D)‐negative patients. Abstract.Leukocyte migration and immunocytoadherence tests have been used to demonstrate cold immunoglobulin receptors on peripheral blood lymphocytes of five patients with mixed idiopathic cryoglobulinaemia IgG‐IgM. Studies of these patients revealed that, contrary to finding with normal subjects, preincubation of lymphocytes at 4°C inhibited their migration and that as this temperature lymphocytes formed rosettes with other lymphocytes from the same subject. Inhibition of migration was, however, not observed when a B lymphocyte‐deprived leukocyte population was used and the rosettes formation was inhibited when pure human immunoglobulins or anti‐immunoglobulin sera were added to the lymphocyte suspension before cold exposure. Abstract.The San serum (anti‐K14) recognizes a high‐frequency red‐cell antigen that is related to the Kell blood group system. The antibody reacts with the red cells of all of more than 600 random blood donors, but red cells of Kophenotype are nonreactive.
