Hybridoma technology has made it possible to prepare a range of antibodies which define developmental and functional compartments of the T lymphocyte lineage in man. The feasibility of achieving this aim, and some immediate clinical applications, are illustrated in this report on seven monoclonal antibodies from seven selected hybridoma clones, which are shown to define subclasses of human T cells according to their immune function and developmental rank.

Serum of children with the nephrotic syndrome contained high titers of a (19s) IgM antibody against sheep, horse, guinea pig, rat, and rabbit red blood cells but not against cow red blood cells. There was high correlation between high titers of antisheep antibodies and active nephrotic syndrome in the children with minimal change nephrotic syndrome. The antibody differed from the Paul‐Bunnell antibody found in patients with infectious mononucleosis and from the anti‐Forssman, Hangautziu‐Deicher antibody found in patients with horse serum sickness. A monoclonal anti‐A antibody has been evaluated and found suitable for use as a potent routine ABO grouping reagent, without the use of additives. The IgM anti‐A (MH2/6D4) is secreted into the tissue culture supernatant by a permanent line of cloned cells derived by fusion of anti‐A producing spleen cells and a mouse myeloma cell line. Anti‐D immunoglobulin is an effective prophylactic against rhesus isoimmunization. It is generally regarded as ineffective once antibody production has developed though there have been a number of inconclusive reports suggesting it may suppress early sensitization. Idiopathic analbuminemia was fortuitously detected in a 30‐year‐old Italian woman. No associated disease condition could be revealed in this patient, the only consistent finding being a slight tendency to develop ankle edema. Asthenia and a moderate hypotension were also recorded. Trace amounts (5.2 mg/100 ml) of serum albumin were determined by immunochemical methods. Laboratory features also included increased circulating levels of cholesterol and β‐lipoproteins, as well as elevation of acute phase reactants and immunoglobulins. Albumin turnover studies showed low albumin synthesis and abnormally slow albumin degradation rate. No consanguinity of the parentage could be traced in this patient and an autosomal recessive transmission of the trait was suggested.An extensive review of the literature disclosed 19 additional cases of this rare condition, their occurrence actually challenging the vital role of albumin in man. A specific and sensitive radioimmunoassay was developed to investigate the immunochemical properties of serum anti‐T antibodies. Evidence was presented that the radioimmunoassay can measure non‐agglutinating as well as agglutinating anti‐T antibodies, while the hemagglutination method can detect only the latter type. Although the hemagglutination method failed to detect anti‐T agglutinins in cord sera, the radioimmunoassay results demonstrated the presence of non‐agglutinating antibodies.
