Abstract.Serum from a patient with multiple myeloma exhibited an unusual concurrence of abnormalities: (1) bitypic gammopathy consisting of a whole Λ‐IgG 1 paraprotein plus a circulating Λ‐Bence Jones protein; (2) marked insolubility of the partially purified paraprotein under conditions of low ionic strength, but good solubility upon further purification; (3) release of an unusual low molecular weight fragment containing Fc antigenic determinants under standard conditions of mercaptoethanol reduction of the purified paraprotein. Evidence is presented supporting the origin of the Fc fragment from the paraprotein heavy chain and describing the requirement for 6 M urea for its dissociation from the reduced and alkylated heavy chain. The phenomenon is evidently not rare, since screening of 14 additional myeloma sera revealed one with similar euglobulin properties and an apparently similar Fc fragment abnormality. Abstract.Hepatitis B immune globulin has been prepared for clinical trials in Sweden. Abstract.The preconditions and kinetics of absorption and elution of HL‐A specific antibodies from platelets, their antibody binding capacity (‘activity’) and the stability of HL‐A receptors on platelets were studied. It was found that the acid elution technique is the only useful method as compared to the ether or heat elution. The optimal ratio of absorbed serum to eluate volume, platelet number, incubation temperature and time were evaluated. At pH 3.0–3.5 (range tested between pH 1.5 and 5.0) the strongest eluate activity was obtained. The fixation of HL‐A specific antibodies to platelet receptors was not reduced by repeated washings with buffered saline, hypo‐ and hyperosmolaric salt solutions (range 0.077 to 2.464 mol NaCl). The capacity of antigenic receptors of platelets to bind complement‐fixing HL‐A antibodies remained unaltered after treatment with distilled water, hypo‐ and hyperosmolaric salt solutions (range as above) and incubation between pH 5 and 9. Freezing (−20°C), heating (56°C) and short incubation at pH 10 moderately altered HL‐A receptors on platelets, which clearly deteriorated at pH 3 or after incubation at 100°C. A standardized elutio

Abstract.Data from an examination of 2,008 sera from parous women for lymphocytotoxic antibodies (LCTAb) and complement‐fixing platelet antibodies (CFPAb) are presented. The incidence of LCTAb was 13.4% and the incidence of CFPAb 2.9%. The finding of 14 sera with CFPAb to platelets in the absence of LCTAb is discussed. It is suggested that cytotoxic antibodies belong to two different globulin classes: complement‐fixing cytolytic antibodies and blocking antibodies only cytolytic with rabbit complement. Abstract.A Bombay blood group was detected in a 12‐year‐old Turkish girl with the rare Lewis type Le (a‐b‐). When using several phytohemagglutinins and Helix agglutinins (extracts from albumin glands of different snails), no ABH substances were detectable. However, after RDE treatment cryptantigens were demonstrable with anti‐HLa (Laburnum alpinum), anti‐BHEe (Evonymus europaeus), anti‐AHp (Helix pomatia), and anti‐TAh(Arachis hypogaea). Similarly, by application of the indirect fluorescence antibody method, only cryptantigens were detectable by anti‐BHEe, anti‐AHP, and anti‐TAh. Therefore, it was assumed that in Bombay cells only the surface antigenic sites are absent, whereas the cryptantigens are present. Abstract.Snail agglutinin (anti‐AEc, anti‐A1of cold agglutinin type) from the albumin gland ofEuhadra callizona amaliaewas purified by affinity chromatography (meconium‐A aminoethyl cellulose). Its physicochemicl properties are as follows: S20, w: 5.3S. Isoelectric point: pH 3.6. Molecular weight: 8.9 × 104. Hexose content: 5.1%. The amino acid composition is that of an acidic protein.The agglutination is inhibited by GalNAc, GNAc, raffinose, and melibiose at low concentration. It does not agglutinate B‐ and O‐RDE‐treated human red cells. Some blood group A‐active substances (secretor A saliva and hog gastric mucin A + H) have low potency to inhibit the agglutination. Anti‐ABC has no ability to release the cell‐fixed anti‐Eorssman haemolysin and the cell‐fixed blood group A‐decomposing enzyme.
