AbstractA series of fusions using mouse myeloma cells and spleen cells from mice immunized with blood group substances or human red cells was performed with the aim of obtaining ABO antibodies suitable for routine blood grouping. Seven strongly agglutinating antibodies against antigens in the ABO system were obtained from 18 fusions. These antibodies were tested extensively in manual and automated routines, and six of them were found to be as good as or better than commercial polyclonal test sera of human origin.

AbstractA monoclonal anti‐IgE antibody was obtained that reacted with some IgE myeloma proteins and with all but a few normal sera. Family studies proved that a genetic marker of IgE had been detected. This allotype, called Em(1), segregates in association with certain Gm‐Am haplotypes. The available quantitative evidence warrants the conclusion that human IgE has genetic variants, but no subclasses. Samples from various populations of five continents, representative for the respective prevalent Gm‐Am haplotypes, were tested for Em(1). Em(1) was absent mainly in haplotypes carrying A2m(2) and G2m(n). These closely linked genes are located in a chromosomal region that comprises theγ2‐γ4‐ε‐α2CH genes. AbstractDifficulty in determining the ABO blood group led to the discovery of an anti‐I cold auto‐agglutinin in the serum of a blood donor. The peculiarity of this antibody is that its activity is enhanced in the presence of a preservative found in manufactured anti‐sera: sodium azide. AbstractSignificantly more peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBM) from 39 patients with lymphoma (p<0.001), myeloma (p<0.001), or leukemia (p<0.001–0.025) bind transferrin (Trf) than those of 23 normals. That Trf was bound to a receptor on these cells was shown by the inhibition of these cells bound to125I‐Trf with unlabeled Trf. AbstractRed cells, serum and plasma samples of 20 individuals, selected for their C4 allotypes, were distributed from Bonn to five laboratories, for investigation of their Chido (Ch) and Rodgers (Rg) determinants. One anti‐Ch (M.H.) and one anti‐Rg(Prest.) were distributed, but the individual laboratories also used their own reagents and their own typing methods. There was general agreement in interpretation of the majority of samples. Partial inhibition for Ch and Rg was detected. Two samples gave anomalous results; one sample with C4 A1,3 BQO, QO had Ch determinants on the red cells and in plasma (partial inhibition), and another sample with C4 A3,4 B5, QO apparently lacked Ch determinants on the red cells and in plasma. Heterogeneity of anti‐Ch and anti‐Rg was suggested in testing red cells, perhaps, reflecting a quantitative effect. This heterogeneity was confirmed by inhibition studies.
