Abstract.Isophilic immune response was profoundly depressed in rats injected with heterophilic antigen during the first week of life and challenged with sheep red cells 10 to 18 weeks later. Untreated litter mates served as controls. When neonatal treatment was given during the second week of life and/or challenge with sheep red cells was deferred until 20 weeks, the isophilic immune response was inhibited to a lesser degree. Rats injected neonatally with sheep red cells had decreased amounts of isophilic and heterophilic antibodies upon challenge with sheep red cells 12 weeks later, while intervals of 16 to 20 weeks between neonatal treatment and adult immunization with sheep red cells increased heterophilic antibodies without significant changes in isophilic antibodies. Rats exposed neonatally to either heterophilic antigen or sheep red cells, and challenged with heterophilic antigen as adults, formed significantly more heterophilic antibodies than did control litter mates. These observations were interpreted as resulting from imprinting of large numbers of cells with receptors for heterophilic antigen after neonatal exposure to the antigen, and cellular diversion of antigen upon challenge of adult animals with sheep red cells. The possible relationship of this phenomenon to the interference with Rh immunization of ABO incompatibility in man was considered.

Abstract.The purpose of the present work was to determine the significance of specific antibodies, as compared to cross‐reacting antibodies in causing the hemolytic disease of the newborn in cases of ABO incompatibility. Fifteen cases of severe icterus, including twelve who had received exchange transfusion and two cases ofante partumfetal death, were investigated. The amount of anti A, anti B, and cross‐reacting antibodies was assayed in maternal blood within 48 h after delivery. Specific antibodies were found more consistently and in higher titres than cross‐reacting antibodies. It therefore seems reasonable to assume that these are the antibodies responsible for the development of the disease in the newborn in our

Abstract.The results of agglutination and agglutination‐inhibition experiments with two spong extracts (Axinellasp. andCliona celata) and three snail extracts (Achatina granulata, Theba pisanaandHelicella uirgata, banded form) are reported.The extracts which show D‐galactose specificity and are also inhibited by sugars related to D‐galactose or containing it, have been subdivided into 1. a subgroup with no blood group specificity to which belongAxinellasp.,Cliona celataandRicinus communisextract and 2. another subgroup with B‐like specificity to which belong extracts ofHelicella virgata(banded form),Bandeiraea simplicifoliaandFomes fomentariusextracts.Extracts of subgroup 1. but not of subgroup 2. are inhibited by Pn XIV poly‐saccharide. Abstract.Plasma Protein Fraction, USP (PPF) has largely replaced preparations of pooled plasma as a plasma expander. Three commercial lots of PPF (Plasmanate ®‐Cutter) prepared in 1959 were subjected to a planned stability study extending over a nine year period with the following findings: 1. Motion lability was not adversely affected by storage for periods up to 7 years at temperatures of 25° or below. 2. With extended time, there was a small gradual decrease in the albumin component and a corresponding increase in a component with an electrophoretic mobility of alpha‐globulin but with a sedimentation rate equivalent to that of albumin; this rate of change was greatly accelerated at 40°. 3. Viscosity increased at a rate of approximately 0.3% per year at 5° and 25°; at 40° viscosity increased sharply with extended time. 4. Turbidity was little affected by time and temperature except for periods in excess of 2 years at 40°. 5. No antigenic changes were detectable after 2 years at 40° or 8 years at 25°. 6. Clinical studies in normal volunteers with PPF stored 9 years at 25°, and in ill patients with PPF stored 2 years at 40° and 9 years at 25° showed no adverse reactions.
