Abstract.In this review are discussed the nature of T cell subsets, defined with monoclonal antibodies, responding in T‐non‐T and T‐T autologous mixed‐lymphocyte reactions (AMLR) and antigens stimulating in AMLR, soluble products of AMLR and generation of suppressor, helper and cytotoxic functions. On the basis of these data a model of immunoregulation in vivo can be proposed. We believe that AMLR is a real phenomenon and not an artefact and perhaps represents a mechanism by which various immune functions are regulated, including feedback regulation of AMLR. Abstract.Direct comparative studies between a radio‐immune antiglobulin test (RIAT), an enzyme‐linked antiglobulin test (ELAT) and a haemagglutination assay (HA) were carried out using anti‐RBC hybridoma culture supernatants, monoclonal antibodies of established specificity, and immune mouse sera. Abstract.The functional antibacterial activity of an intravenous immunoglobulin preparation (Swiss Red Cross Immunoglobulin, SRK‐Ig) was tested both in vitro and in vivo. Using type III group B streptococci as a model system, the intravenous immunoglobulin preparation was shown to enhance phagocytosis and killing of the bacteria by human neutrophils. There was good activity to several type III strains, and for efficient opsonization both antibody and complement were required. In an animal model of neonatal group B streptococcal sepsis, passively administered immunoglobulin enhanced survival with 27/37 (73%) treated animals surviving compared to only 3/16 (19%) controls. Abstract.To determine the degree of damage induced by different modes of agitation during storage of platelets for 5 days in polyolefin (PL‐732), we studied pH, platelet count, release of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and β‐thromboglobulin (β‐TG), morphology and osmotic recovery. Platelets were maintained at 20–24°C on elliptical, 6 rpm circular, 2 rpm circular and flat bed agitators. Results showed that the most and least effective modes of agitation were the 2 rpm circular and the elliptical rotators, respectively. Elliptical rotators exhibited excessive release of LDH (46%) and β‐TG (51%) while the 2 rpm circular model produced significantly less discharge of these proteins (LDH 13%; β‐TG 30%; p7.5) when platelet counts were under 1×109/ml. Flat bed shakers and 6 rpm circular agitators were acceptable but flat bed units were unable to resuspend the platelet ‘button’ which forms after the final preparative centrifugation. The 2 rpm circular rotator showed significantly less LDH and β‐TG release than did the 6 rpm version (p<0.05) and permitted smooth resuspension of the platelet ‘button’. Abstract.We have investigated 8 cases of clinically manifest hepatitis type B said to be posttransfusion hepatitis that have become known in the years 1978–1981. Paired samples of serum from all 54 blood donors implicated have been drawn at the time of the donation in question as well as a few months later. Only 1 donor, negative for HBsAg but positive with high titer for anti‐HBc, could have been a possible source of infection. There is strong evidence that this person is a chronic low level carrier. In the case of 2 other patients transmission of hepatitis by clotting factors from pooled plasma cannot be denied. Abstract.A total of 20,643 samples of blood donated to three American Red Cross Blood Service regions were tested for antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen (anti‐HBc) in order to evaluate and understand its significance and implications. All 20,643 samples were non‐reactive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) when screened at the regions. Overall, 2.2% of all samples were found to have anti‐HBc, and a total of 16 had anti‐HBc in the absence of antibodies to surface antigen (anti‐HBs) activity. 1 of the 16 samples with anti‐HBc in the absence of anti‐HBs was found to have HBsAg when tested by a sensitive procedural modification of the Ausria II test.
