摘要:
AbstractExamples of unusually effective and successful management were uncovered in a study of selected business firms, public agencies, and nongovernmental and community organizations in six Latin American countries. Many employ novel management and organizational development strategies that: run counter to both conventional practice and textbook guidelines; produce significant contributions to social and economic development; and suit leadership and management styles to the local culture. Lessons emerging from the study suggest needed reforms in the content of management education imparted by the region's business schools. © 1995 John Wiley&Sons, Inc

摘要:
AbstractAscardio, a not‐for‐profit association formed in 1976, provides organization, staff, physical plant, and economic support to operate the Health Ministry's Regional Cardiovascular Center for west‐central Venezuela, thus combining the management features of a private foundation with the public objectives of a national bureaucracy. A wide range of in‐ and outpatient services are offered, with cardiovascular service growth outpacing that of major public hospitals elsewhere in Venezuela. Management features include novel approaches to staff compensation, employee empowerment, information controls, fee charges, and a wide‐ranging support network that spans private sector medical and public health bureaucracy linkages as well as political, volunteer, and patient groups. © 1995 John Wiley

摘要:
AbstractFundación Social operates a total of 12 companies, mainly in Colombia's financial sector, and employs its profits to support social programs addressed to removing the structural causes that generate poverty in target communities. Together, these programs directly and indirectly reach an impressive number of beneficiaries. The companies are expected to compete effectively for their respective markets and some appear to be unusually successful. Ongoing efforts are made to articulate an organizational culture that is consistent with Fundación Social's mission as well as reconcile that mission with viable strategy and day‐to‐day action in the complex task of managing social development in a cleavage‐ridden society. © 1995 John Wiley&S

摘要:
AbstractChile's Construction Chamber (CCC) operates a network of 13 companies that provide Chamber member firms with employee health care, health and old‐age insurance fund management, vocational training, and sports and recreational programs. By operating these programs successfully long before the introduction of Chile's free market reforms, CCC has shown how private enterprise can replace unwieldy state‐supported social welfare systems with reliable, self‐supporting services. CCC's strong, cohesive corporate culture, largely shaped by managers loaned by member firms to the Chamber and to its companies, has facilitated the timely introduction of new services and contributed to CCC's lobbying and negotiation skills in a changing economic and political system. © 1995 John Wiley&Son

摘要:
AbstractThe management challenge entailed in Mexico City's massive urban renewal effort following the 1985 earthquake went well beyond organizing relief and reconstruction tasks. A collective action agency successfully avoided a political crisis by enlisting grass‐roots participation and mobilizing dozens of public, private, and volunteer organizations in a swiftly executed joint undertaking. © 1995 John Wiley&Sons, I

摘要:
AbstractThe Olodum Cultural Group describes itself as a nongovernmental organization that combines a variety of profit‐making show business activities with wide‐ranging nonprofit programs addressed to cultural, social, and political action. Show business activities, music production and recording, dance, and theater presentations build on Olodum's research on Afro‐Bahian origins, history, and customs, which serve as a rich source of new artistic themes and rhythms. Social and political action programs are focused on highlighting the identity of the Black population of Maciel–Pelourinho, a district of the city of Salvador that UNESCO has declared to be a heritage of humankind but is inhabited largely by social cast‐offs, prostitutes, transvestites, and drug addicts. Olodum also grows its own talent by operating a “Creative School,” where district children enroll in courses that range from Black identity and human rights to the performing arts. Additionally, Olodum campaigns include curbing police violence, cooperation with AIDS prevention, city clean‐up drives, and representing Maciel–Pelourinho in world events. © 1995 Jo
