摘要:
In all 101 species and varieties of marine algae are mentioned for S. Tomé and Príncipe. These records arise from examination of the material in the herbarium of the Botanical Institute of the University of Coimbra, together with material collected in 1956 by Dr C. A. Thorold. From the latter material there are 17 new records for the island of S. Tomé.No new species have been described, butAcantkophora ramulosaKütz. is emended, andBryopsis densaPilger andStruvea multipartitaPilger are reduced to the synonymy ofBryopsis pennatavar.secundaandStruvea anastomosansrespectively.Information on the climate and tides of the islands is given, and a series of ‘seasonal coincidences’ likely to influence coastal marine conditions is described for the Gulf of

摘要:
Following a brief survey of the wall structure of the vegetative hyphae of a number of basidiomyeetes, attention is focused uponPolyporus myllitaeCke. et Mass. After removal of the outer amorphous layer by various chemical treatments, the underlying surface is seen to consist of an interwoven network of microfibrils. There is no evidence of any preferred angle of orientation. However, on what is believed to be the inner surface of the hyphal wall, microfibrils show a strong tendency towards a transverse orientation. The resulting structure is compatible with the multi‐net concept of cell wall growth of Houwink and Koelofsen. There is no obvious change in microfibril orientation in passing along a hypha towards its tip. Electron‐opaque cross‐walls partition hyphae, sometimes separate a branch from a parent hypha, and occur in clamp connections. The cross‐wall consists of microfibrils underlying, or embedded in, an amorphous matrix. They are circularly arranged around a single central pore which has a thicke

摘要:
All the known West African taxa are surveyed and their variation and distribution is discussed. Chromosome numbers for most of the taxa are given, in many cases for the first time, and published cytological data for those genera occurring in West Africa is reviewed. Many of the taxa have been studied under cultivation and most under living conditions in the field. The results of these observations are considered in relation to the evolution of new variations and to the taxonomy of the groups concerned. The following new taxa are described:Aneilema beniniensesubsp.leonense, C'ommelina diffusasubsp.montana, Floscopa africanasubsp.petrophilaandSlanfieldiella axillaris.Several nomenclatural changes have been made, the most important being the recognition that the African speciesCommelina gerrardiC. B. Clarke andC. vogeliiC. B. Clarke are conspecific with the AmericanC. erectaLinn, which thus becomes a pantropie species complex. Several species are recorded from West Africa for the first time including:Coleolrype kiurentiiK. Schum.Commelina carsoniiC. B. Clarke,C. zambesiacaC. B. Clarke,Cyanotis arachnoideaC. B. Clarke, andPalisota lagopusMildbr. The pattern of variation in the larger species complexes in the generaAneilema, Commelina, CyanotisandFloscopais considered in detail. These and other groups in the family are considered to be in an active state of evolutionary change. The factors which have stimulated these changes and the biological processes by means of which they are brought about are discussed. Attention is drawn to the suitability of this family for evolutionary studies and its value in the teaching of experimental taxonomy in the tropics.

摘要:
Study of meiosis in synthesized hybrids has permitted a genome analysis to be carried out with respect to the holotype ofA. indicumGhatak, 4x, originally found wild near Calcutta. The two differentiated diploids from whichA. indicum, 4x, seems to have arisen are represented in the analysis byA. zollingerifrom Ceylon and by two strains of an Indian diploid provisionally designatedA. incisumsens. lat. 2x. Supplementary information excluding an autopolyploid origin forA. indicumis provided by hybrids betweenA. indicum4x and an unrelated tetraploid,A. malesianumGhatak. Ecological information is supplied for the material ofA. zollingeri, indicating that it occupies a specialized habitat which might be found in India if search is made in the right kind of territory.A. incisum2x is shown to be much more widespread and to be present in hill country, or occasionally in lowlands, from the Himalayas to South India inclusive. It contains a number of genetically determined biotypes differing slightly in morphology but behaving as members of one species when combined into hybrids. Further morphological information and a revised key for separating the specimens used in the investigation is provided in an Appendix.
