摘要:
AbstractA new moving/deforming FEM analysis of two‐dimensional phase change problems is presented. The region occupied by the solid phase is divided into a non‐moving element region and a moving region consisting of the finite elements next to the freezing interface. A transfinite mapping method is used to generate new finite‐element meshes and motion in the liquid phase during simulations. Several two‐dimensional Stefan problems are analysed and discussed in relation to analytical solutions and other numerical tec

摘要:
AbstractThis paper presents a new algorithm to compute the distribution of the strain energy release rate along the crack front for three‐dimensional cracks (e.g. surface cracks). The algorithm is economical and accurate. The algorithm is illustrated via two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional examples including a surface crack in a cylinder under internal pressure and side‐grooved compact‐test specimens. It is shown, via specific examples, that only a single, self‐similar virtual crack extension is necesary to accurately compute the strain‐energy release‐rate distribution along

摘要:
AbstractGiven the existing interest, from a computational point of view, in the boundary layer aspects of the theory of thin shear‐deformable plates, we undertake an asymptotic analysis of the stress boundary problem for a semi‐infinite anisotropic plate. Our principal conclusion is that the effect of anisotropy can result in order of magnitude changes for the quantities of interest, relative to the corresponding quantities for orthotropic and isotropic pla

摘要:
AbstractA triangular plate element, allowing transverse shear deformations, is developed in this paper. The element is compatible and employs rotations and slopes as well as lateral deflection as degrees of freedom. Through static condensation it is possible to remove the slopes and form a less complex, incompatible element, involving only the lateral deflection and rotations. Illustrative examples are presented to demonstrate the performance of the element before and after condensation.

摘要:
AbstractThe boundary integral formulation for unsteady thermal stresses in three‐dimensional quasi‐static problems is proposed. It is shown that three‐dimensional unsteady thermal stress problems can be solved easily without the volume integral by means of the thermoelastic displacement potential and the boundary‐element method. It is also shown that the time integral can be easily carried out analytically. In order to investigate the accuracy of this method, unsteady thermal stress distributions for a cube are o

摘要:
AbstractAn integral equation formulation of scattering of waves obeying Helmholtz's equation is considered in two dimensions, along with a standard discretization that generates a full matrix equation. A transformation involving banded matrices is introduced that (for most large problems) replaces this full matrix by one which, although full, has nearly all of its elements reduced in size by many orders of magnitude. Sample calculations show that in many cases these small elements may be approximated by zero with little loss in accuracy, thereby generating a sparse matrix equation. This transformation is effective whenever much of the scatterer(s) is somewhat smooth, although isolated discontinuities are allowed. It is speculated that with minor changes this transformation will also be effective for three‐dimensional problems and for a variety of integral equations of wave motio

AbstractThe paper shows a combined transformation for material and element rotation, related to the finite‐element method. With this, the simplest co‐ordinate systems can be chosen individually for structure/solid, element and material. A corrected criterion for a material to be orthotropic is also inclu

摘要:
AbstractA new method is proposed for designing aerofoils in potential flow, based on the von Mises co‐ordinate transformation. This formulation has the advantages of eliminating the numerical grid generation process and providing a design method which does not require iteratively adjusting the aerofoil shape. The method has been tested for symmetric and non‐symmetric aerofoils at several angles of attack, and the results show excellent agreement with the exact profi
