摘要:
AbstractDendritic cells which contain alkaline phosphatase and which are darkened by osmium iodide are found both in the nonpigmented and in the pigmented epidermis of the potto (Perodicticus potto). Similar cells are numerous in the pilary canals of the hair follicles. These cells, which are DOPA‐negative, are found throughout the epidermis, from the dermoepidermal junction to the stratum granulosum. In distribution and in appearance, these dendritic cells are identical to the “Langerhans” cells or to “high‐level” branched cells. Even though we have not been able to ascertain whether or not the melanotic melanocytes contain demonstrable alkaline phosphatase, we conclude, tentatively, that in the potto the dendritic cells in the basal layer, whether melanotic or amelanotic, and “high‐level” branched cells belong to t

摘要:
AbstractDamage to the rat ovary at 60 days of age causes irregularities in the estrous cycle and leads to continuous cornification of the vagina. These vaginal changes occurred within two to three months after bilateral irradiation (800 or 2,000 r) or after bilateral castration and autotransplantation of a portion of one ovary. Unilateral irradiation or ligation of the ovarian arteries at their junction with the uterine artery produces similar changes within five to seven months. Comparable vaginal changes did not occur in control animals until they reached the age of ten months.

摘要:
AbstractExisting descriptions of the ultrastructure of myelinated nerve fibers were confirmed and extended on methacrylate‐ and Epon‐embedded sympathetic rami of the frog. The nerve fiber was not surrounded by a basement membrane, but by collagen. The Schwann cell contained fibrils, dark granules, mitochondria and also smooth‐edged vesicles which probably transported material into the nerve fiber. Profiles of large vesicles and of collaterals of the main nerve fiber, found in the Schwann cell, were interpreted as the corpuscles of Elzholz and Reich. The presence of cytoplasm between axolemma and myelin was considered as areas of transition of myelinated and tunicated fibers. Existing descriptions of the ultrastructure of the node of Ranvier were confirmed, but the occurence of Schmidt‐Lanterman indentations remained somewhat doubtful. The axon contained filaments, dark granules, mitochondria and a great variety of vesicles; their interpretation was difficult because of the unknown submicroscopic differences of sympathetic, somatic motor and afferent nerve fibers. Concurring with other authors, some vesicles with a light center may have been concerned with acetylcholinesterase activity. It was speculated that dark‐cored vesicles represented probably catecholamine bodies and others were tentatively related to mitochondria formation. Some electron dense granules may have derived from RNA particles in the perikaryon of t

摘要:
AbstractThree techniques, phase contrast microscopy, microradiography, and electron microscopy, have been used to study the variation in mineralization and presence of collagen fibers in the bone matrix adjacent to lacunae and canaliculi. Undecalcified, partially decalcified and fully decalcified sections of normal bone from old individuals have been studied. No stains were used. A fairly good correlation of the results obtained with these techniques could be demonstrated as far as the degree of mineralization is concerned. A zone of modified matrix is found adjacent to lacunae and canaliculi and this zone is prone to hypermineralization. In certain areas, especially in interstitial bone, lacunae may become completely obliterated with a hypermineralized material. Collagen fibers are found at the surface of the lumen of lacunae and canaliculi. The arrangement of these fibers is in most cases different from that in the adjoining bone matrix producing a well delimited zone which separates the lacunae and canaliculi from the rest of the matrix. Microradiography of bone sections partially decalcified in EDTA indicates that decalcificationin vitromay result in an initial preferential decalcification of areas previously hypercalcified.

摘要:
AbstractThe Golgi apparatus has been recognized as the initial site of mucigen accumulation. The mucigen is seen forming within the agranular lamellar membranes and vesicles of the Golgi, enlarging and coalescing with loss of individual mucigen droplet membranes, bulging the cell into its characteristic goblet appearance, and subsequent rupturing of the microvilli plasma membrane with discharge of the mucin. The density of the well developed goblet cell is a function of nuclear and cytoplasmic compression by the mass of mucigen. The fine structure of the “resting goblet” cell is indistinguishable from that of the principal columnar absorbing cells. No morphologic evidence of mucigen formation in the endoplasmic reticulum is found, but continuity is demonstrated between the rough‐surfaced endoplasmic reticulum and agranular Golgi membranes. It is possible that the mucigen or its precursors may be synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum then transported to the Golgi where it is concentrated into the morphologically recognizable mu

摘要:
AbstractThe arterial supply of the suprarenal gland was studied in 25 fetal or neonatal specimens consisting of both suprarenal glands, kidneys, diaphragm and associated vessels and 50 selected, adult postmortem specimens. The suprarenal arteries are derived from the aorta but the superior and inferior artery invariably become the chief supply of the diaphragm and kidney, respectively. The arteries supplying the gland are end arteries which branch profusely on the surface of the suprarenal capsule. These in turn give rise to smaller vessels in and under the capsule. At this level a unique capillary system forms vascular caps on glomerular clusters of cells. The vascular channels through the cortex are either cleft‐like sinusoids passing through or between glomerular cell groups or arteriae medullae. The former supply the cortical cells and the latter supply the medulla. The sinusoids of the inner cortex are wide, filled with red blood cells and constitute the first order of venous drainage. The inner, provisional cortex of the fetal suprarenal gland is described and contrasted with the X zone of the mouse which is completely different in histological structure and manner of appearance and disappearanc

摘要:
AbstractAn electromyographic study of the extensor apparatus of the forearm, using a multichannel electromyograph and bipolar needle electrodes, was carried out on 12 subjects. Recordings were obtained concurrently from medial, lateral and long heads of the triceps brachii and anconeus. The investigation confirms that the three heads contract independently during extension of the forearm, that the medial head and the anconeus are always active, and that the lateral head and, to a lesser extent, the long head act as reinforcing auxiliaries. The anconeus was found to be active also during resisted but not free loaded pronation and supination, contrary to commonly held opinion.
