摘要:
Fifty‐two populations of fifty species of wildflowers characteristic of either field or deciduous forest were analyzed to determine pattens of biomass allocation to component organs. These populations' allocation patterns were used to determine generalized allocation patterns of the herb component of earlier (field) and later (deciduous forest) secondary successional communities. The following patterns were determined: (1) The proportion of dry matter allocated to seed reproductive organs was greater in field populations than in woods populations; (2) The herbs of woodland habitats allocated a greater proportion of their resources to leaves and belowground organs than field habitat herbs; (3) The field annuals allocated a greater proportion of their resources to reproduction than field perennials; (4) Introduced species showed a higher reproductive allocation than native species of fields; (5) Regression analysis showed strong correlations of component organ biomass to total biomass and belowground biomass to shoot biomass.

摘要:
The flower ofCalycanthustraps a wide variety of beetles which, while imprisoned, effect pollination. During their occupancy the insects eat a protein‐rich tissue developed at the tips of the inner tepals, stamens, and staminodia. Cells of this food tissue differentiate a large number of cytoplasmic protein tubules by using a protein vacuole as an assembly site. The cells comprising the food tissue represent a very specialized plant cell type and one which facilitates this particular plant/insect relationship.

摘要:
Cohabiting ants place animal remains in stem cavities ofHydnophytum formicarumJack (Rubiaceae). Insect larvae were made radioactive, introduced into the plant, and pieces of stem tissue were subsequently analyzed for radioactivity. Breakdown products of the insects had moved into the stem tissue and were also translocated up the stem. The conclusion is that the ants “feed” the plant a portion of their catch, thereby maintaining the fecundity of the host plant, and ultimately insuring a supply of homesites.

摘要:
In this paper, as a sequel of my survey appeared in 1969 in this Journal, supplements are given to the topics “Pairing,” “Gametogenesis,” “Haploid Parthenogenesis,” “Hybrids,” “Automixis,” and “Some Cytological Details” in pennate diatoms. The various kinds of peculiarities are facts—their interpretation in terms of physiology and biochemistry, indeed, rest completely open for future research.

摘要:
Growth by cell divisions in apical meristems is mainly a synthesis of cell matter. Cell divisions in the meristem follow certain patterns, with radial gradients which may be abruptly interrupted. The gradients go in the reverse directions in stem and root apex. The cause of the gradients seems to be unknown, likewise why the patterns are the opposite in stem and root, but they form the foundation of ensuing tissue differentiation. Cell elongation is driven by the metabolic energy of intussusception of new matter in the wall and by the accepted patterns for water fluxes. An attempt has been made to formulate questions which ought to be answered for a better insight into the mechanism of longitudinal growth.

摘要:
In a new type ofBatrachospermumlife history, theBatrachospermumphase does not originate from the erect filaments of aPseudochantransiabut directly from a prostrate crustose growth, the prothalle of Sirodot. It is probable that the few lowermost segments of thoseBatrachospermumcladomes are diploid, the remainder due to an interposed “somatic” meiosis are haploid.
