AbstractThe article describes employing a short self‐instructional videocourse as a form of in‐service education for teachers of children with severe learning difficulties. The study examines the feasibility of training teachers to implement simple teaching games in the classroom, aimed at enhancing the basic number skills of children with severe learning difficulties. Teachers’attitudes to the materials were positive, and the videocourse was effective in helping to improve the counting ability of a sample of thirty children. AbstractHierarchical problem‐solving strategies employed in solving exercise science problems were examined in this study, which also tested the validity of an educational computer simulation. Hypothesis testing was used as the theoretical base for the study of differences in problem‐solving within the computer simulation. In a previous study two groups of undergraduate (novices) and graduate students were compared in their ability to solve exercise science problems. The present study added a group of faculty (experts) who were presented with the same simulation protocol as the other subjects. Protocol analysis and the Pitt coding system were used to analyse verbal data. Group differences were examined statistically. The faculty were superior in interpreting data and used the Basic Heuristic and Pattern Extraction strategies for the generation and use of algorithms. AbstractThis paper describes the model of internationally supported self‐study developed at the Kathmandu International Study Centre in Nepal. The Centre aims to provide for the varied home country needs of the secondary aged expatriate children resident in Nepal through a balanced programme of group tutorials and self‐study activities. AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between interactive video based teacher ratings and direct classroom observation of social skills. The behaviour of 25 randomly selected grade seven children aged between 11 and 12 years was rated by nine teachers using items from an interactive video social skills rating scale (Bain 1989). A video camera was then placed in each of the teacher's classrooms for one week to sample the actual behaviour of the target children. AbstractThe authors had the task of evaluating an innovative style of exhibition in the Royal Museums of Scotland. Believing in the principle (established by the Gothenberg Group) that learning must be studied from the viewpoint of the learner, the authors sought a practicable technique of formative evaluation which would give illuminative insights into experience. Retaining the tools of questionnaire and interview to provide baseline data on reported experience and opinion, they applied Kagan's technique of Interpersonal Process Recall (structured video recall) to gain direct insight into the experience of visitors to the exhibition. This account explains how the technique suited this purpose, and describes the modifications found necessary to classic IPR for this context.

AbstractThe primary aim of the study was to investigate student reactions to the use of courseware as a learning tool in the classroom, particularly the effect of gender. The study involved young school students in a systematic and documented courseware review process. Students as a whole were enthusiastic about using courseware as a tool for learning in the classroom, with a large majority of students endorsing both its motivational appeal and its educational value. Despite this overall positive attitude, however, the data showed important differences between the reactions of male and female students to courseware, male students being more confident about using computers as a learning tool than female. The major implication for educational practice is that teachers, while trying to instil a confident attitude in all their students towards using courseware, should be aware of the particular need to build confidence among female students.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to develop an instrument which would identify and measure independent dimensions of children's attitudes towards microcomputers. The sample consisted of 501 sixth and seventh grade Tasmanian children. The instrument produced by Williams, Coulombe, and Lievrouw (1983) was used as a starting point. Exploratory factor analytic procedures were used to arrive at a final instrument consisting of 17 adjective pairs in semantic differential format.
