摘要:
AbstractThe case for teaching a programming language in the context of a management degree rests upon the perceived value of using mathematical models to structure managerial problems, and upon the relative merits of available languages and packages as modelling tools for students who may not be strongly numerate. An introductory computing course can help students to learn quantitative elements of Business Finance. It encompasses both standard software packages, such as a spreadsheet, together with the elements of BASIC. Students taking subsequent Quantitative Methods courses likewise benefit from the use of packages, but also from using a carefully prepared suite of BASIC programs. This approach is illustrated by materials prepared for automated drawing of project network diagrams on a monitor. Students benefit from reinforcement of the underlying mathematical concepts of network analysis and from extending the programs themselves. This latter process also provides some insight into the nature of commercial software packages and systems.

摘要:
AbstractThe role of the computer should be organising and representing knowledge to give the user easy access and control, rather than trying to create a model of the learner and seeking to prescribe her route through it. Hypertext is high‐level software through which the learner explores and interacts with knowledge. Users can pursue a variety of suggested trails through the material, or they can create new pathways for themselves and others to follow, by forging new links and even by extending the material. Hypertext is inherently multi‐user, blurring the distinction between author, editor and reader. Hypermedia is a name sometimes given to the multi‐media capability of hypertext, emphasising the way in which users can combine, edit and orchestrate sounds, graphics, moving pictures, texts and computer software, at the click of a mouse.Compact disc technology provides the perfect partner to hypertext, offering extremely dense, robust and flexible storage. Products such as CD‐ROM (compact disc read‐only memory) and CD‐I (compact disc interactive), and technologies such as DVI (digital video interactive), offer immense scope for multi‐media learning. Educational technologists face an urgent challenge to harness the power of thi

摘要:
AbstractCollaboration between subject matter specialists, computer programmers and educational technologists has resulted in the production of POPTRAN, a computer assisted learning package designed to teach the basic concepts of population studies. Its evaluation in developing countries, with both naive and specialist users, and subsequent revision, has produced a package of both academic quality and teaching effectiveness.

摘要:
AbstractMany nations are now using computers in order to provide their peoples with improved educational opportunities and a competitive edge in developing an effective workforce. In 198 7, the author visited Singapore in order to assess (a) how effectively computer assisted learning techniques are being used within its educational system, and (b) how other nations might benefit from Singapore's experience. This article reports observations from this visit.

摘要:
AbstractThere is a growing UK interest in the potential of interactive video (IV) for use in schools. This paper considers an application of IV in mathematics classrooms in the United States. Lessons were observed in a number of schools in Oregon, and the reactions of teachers and students to the videodisc presentations are recorded. It was found that participants responded extremely positively to the materials, which were based on a direct instruction model of teaching linked to a mastery learning approach. Despite the apparent effectiveness of these materials, it is argued that their transfer to UK schools would be problematic given current developments in mathematics education. The advantages of a standalone videodisc player for whole‐class use are discussed, and it is argued that this might be appropriate in the short term if IV technology is to be accepted in the UK school syste

摘要:
AbstractThe selection of a suitable learning strategy in individualised science instruction should be influenced by the learning potential of the learners. Components of their‘learning potential’include: aptitude, scientific affect, attitude, and college scores. Achievement gain was measured by the difference between pre‐test and post‐test scores with the credits gained through the enrichment and task activities. Based on their gain scores, learners were divided into high, average and low achievers and their preferences for learning strategies were collected. The results indicated marked differences according to learning potential.Other research has investigated the question of suitable learning strategies for different kinds of learners, but its validity often has been restricted by a limited number of strategies with only a small number of learning components analysed. To overcome such constraints, this study included six independent learning strategies and seven group learning ones. Instead of calculating simple correlations, the influence of different components of learning potential was analysed for three achievement levels, and interaction effects were se
