摘要:
AbstractAggression is not an isolated phenomenon but part of a child's social world which has to be considered as a whole. The issues to be taken in consideration studying it are related to the methods used to assess aggression and also to its classification.

摘要:
AbstractThis article addresses theoretical and methodological problems in the study of aggression in infants and toddlers. It is argued that the occurrence of aggressive behavior in very young children must be considered against the background of their developing social competence. As a result, evidence for the infants' capacities to act with specific intentions and the infants' knowledge of the other as a distinctive individual having his own plans and goals are reviewed. Studies of early social interactions in humans are then examined with special emphasis on cognitive development and social cognition. Finally, the problem of dominance in very young children's groups is considered.

摘要:
AbstractThe occurrence of aggression in young children needs to be considered in terms of the nature of aggression shown and the relationships of which the children are a part. First, this entails subdividing the category “aggressive behavior” into subcategories of different types of aggression, which leads to the consideration of the motivational propensities underlying them. Second, the actor and target's characteristics, the influence of children's familiarity with each other, the context they live in, and the social concomitants of aggression must be conside

摘要:
AbstractShowing off or display behavior of children has gained little attention in child psychology research, while in the ethological literature the same behavior is a well known phenomenon. To see what role display behavior plays in peer‐peer interaction compared to threat and physical aggression, the behavior of 18 children between 3 and 6 years of age was recorded over an entire school year. The frequencies of display behavior, threat and physical aggression were examined and related to the amount of attention a child received from his peers. The attention‐rank had proved to be highly related to leadership abilities as well as dominance in children. The results show interesting similarities between the frequency and temporal patterns of display and threat behavior and the attention children pay to each other. Furthermore, older children with more kindergarten experience as well as high status children show a different temporal pattern (high frequencies after holidays and low frequencies before) as well as a higher frequency of display and threat behavior than younger and low status children. Physical aggression is related to attention‐rank but shows quite a different temporal pattern. It seems that display or showing off behavior serves as a strategy for children to get high regard in the

摘要:
AbstractPrimary manifestations of aggression appear in the behavior of children in the second half of the first year of life. The frequency of Occurrence of interpeer aggression increases with age, and reaches its maximum in the third year. The frequency of aggression may later decrease, but there are considerable individual differences. Changes a h Occur in the form in which aggression is manifested; its motivational background and associated elicitors; its direction, duration, timing, and other operational characteristics, and in the modes of its acquisition. A certain continuity may be traced, however, in any of these features and the development of aggression may be perhaps more adequately represented by the following sequence of developmental stage:1Stage of preaggressive behavior;2Stage of primary differentiation;3Stage of the appearance of the individual pattern of aggressive behavior;4Stage of secondary differentiation of aggression;5Stage of the beginning of the transition into covert behavior—internalization of aggressionThese stages represent certain facets of the interaction between the changing behavioral performance of the child and herlhis social environment, and may be used for evaluating aggressive behavior in young childre

摘要:
AbstractThe natural history, prevalence, and correlates, both psychologic and biologic, of aggressive conduct disorder in childhood, are reviewed. The evidence suggests a valid behavioral syndrome, but is far from decisive.

摘要:
AbstractThe papers in this symposiwn constitute important contributions to the study of children's aggression. Rather than summarizing them, it may be helpful in conclusion to underline two difficulties in understanding the ontogeny of aggression. Both are implicit in much of the symposium, and may in fact stem from the scientific methodology necessarily used to study behavior.
