摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the incidents of inmate aggression that resulted in violence within four Florida Correctional Institutions. The prisons differ structurally and in classification of inmates — two are medium and two are close custody (high) security prisons. The study investigated the type of weapon used in relation to the propensity for and frequency of noncollective (inmate‐to‐inmate or inmate‐to‐staff) violent incidents at the two types of prisons. The result indicated that the scope and nature of assault varied greatly from prison to prison mostly as a result of freedom of movement to make weapons and the security classification of the inmat

摘要:
AbstractLarge electrolytic lesions were placed in the midbrain central gray of male rats. Their effects on hypothalamically induced aggression, switch‐off behaviour, and locomotion were investigated. A number of these animals were also tested for territorial intermale aggression in order to compare electrically induced and spontaneous aggression. Large lesions resulted in an increase of the current threshold to induce aggression by hypo‐thalamic stimulation. Smaller, but still quite large, lesions decreased the threshold current for hypothalamic aggression. After the operation a decrease in the threshold for switch‐off was present, both in the experimental and the control group. Current thresholds for locomotion were decreased after the lesions only in the experimental group.Spontaneous aggression was temporarily decreased after the lesion. No indication was found that other behavioural elements of the animal were distorted by the lesion. The parallel between the effects on spontaneous and electrically induced aggression makes it attractive to ascribe a role to the neural circuit of hypothalamus and central gray in territorial aggression. However, even with large lesions the animals were still capable of fighting, hence the central gray is not indispensable. An attempt was made to explain the differential effects that differently sized central gray lesions have on hypothalamic aggre

摘要:
AbstractScoring systems used to assess intermale aggression have been characterized by arbitrary scales and wide variability in the behaviors selected for measurement. The use of such different systems severely limits the ability of investigators to make meaningful comparisons among studies and indicates that there is a need for a common, statistically derived evaluative system for intermale aggression. We measured the frequency and duration of five major components of agonistic behavior exhibited by intact males toward olfactory bulbectomized stimulus males and then analyzed the data using a number of univariate and multivariate procedures. The results were used to generate two statistically based scoring systems, one a short‐form index and the other a composite index for more detailed studies of aggression. It is hoped that these statistically derived systems will be adopted by other investigators to increase methodological congruence in the fiel

摘要:
AbstractThis study was intended to probe the aggressive nature of monkey infant abuse by comparing the morphology of abusive behavior patterns with that of patterns allocated to both aggression and other categories of behavioral repertoires of macaques. This morphological analysis indicated that most abusive patterns should not be classified in the aggression category as they, at the motor end, differ greatly from macaque aggressive acts. In contrast, they perfectly resemble behaviors that monkeys usually display while manipulating inanimate objects. The implications of this finding for the pathogenic study of monkey infant abuse are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractEthanol (0.25‐1 gm/kg body weight; IP) did not significantly alter shock‐induced fighting, regardless of whether it was administered to both rats or to only one rat of the pair. Higher doses tended to decrease shock‐induced fighting. Ethanol (0.25‐2 gm/kg body weight; IP) also did not induce “nonkiller” rats to kill mice and only high doses (1.5 and 2 gm/kg body weight) decreased the incidence of muricide in “killer” rats. The depressant effects of ethanol on both shock‐induced fighting and muricide appeared to result from drug‐induced ataxia rather than from a direct effect of ethanol on

摘要:
AbstractMale and female college students were instigated to aggression by a confederate's shocks during a preliminary task. The confederate informed half of the treatment subjects of the response strategy which he intended to adopt. The other half received an irrelevant message. All subjects then competed against the confederate, who employed one of the following five response consequence strategies: a) set a maximum shock on all trials; b) set a minimum shock on all trials; c) set shocks identical to the subject's response on the preceding trial; d) set shocks two settings below the subject's response; or e) set shocks two settings above the subject's. The subject's latency to setting a shock, the intensities of the shocks set, the durations of the shock settings, and the subject's reaction times were recorded. When an irrelevant message was delivered, passive responses, well below those of the opponent, resulted in the lowest level of retaliation. In the presence of a relevant message, the match‐same strategy emerged as an effective deterrent to aggressive behavior. The results were found to be consistent with predictions derived from an application of the norm of reciprocity and research demonstrating the enhancing effects achieved through the communication of existing contingencie
