摘要:
&NA;A survey of the medical literature reveals conflicting data as to whether bacteremia occurs during endoscopic examination of the lower gastrointestinal tract. In an attempt to study this problem a prospective study was undertaken, and the first arm of the study included patients undergoing colonoscopy. The second arm of the study, comprising patients undergoing proctosigmoidoscopy, will be presented subsequently. Fifty‐one patients undergoing colonoscopy were studied. Excluded from the study were patients with elevation of temperature above 101°F, inflammatory bowel disease, diarrhea, valvular heart disease, vascular prosthesis, chemotherapy, or immunosuppression. Aerobic and anaerobic cultures were done before and after the procedure, as well as at timed intervals during the procedure. Whenever biopsy or polypectomy were carried out, further cultures were done. Skin cultures were done from venipuncture sites. In one patient (2 per cent)Staphylococcus epidermidiswas found in more than one set of cultures. Polypectomy or biopsy were not associated with bacteremia.

摘要:
&NA;Eighty‐four cases of condyloma acuminatum were presented, with conventional treatment,e.g., surgical excision and fulguration with or without Podophyllin application. Recurrence rate was 28 per cent to 65 per cent, depending on the number and duration of treatments. Immunotherapy was used on 17 patients with recurrent and giant condyloma acuminatum. Condylomata were successfully eradicated in 94.1 per cent of patients, which indicates that immunotherapy is a very effective alternative in the treatment of recurrent and giant condyloma acuminatum.

摘要:
&NA;The three cases herein reported concern metachronous ovarian metastases from primary adenocarcinomas of the colon associated with mesothelial cysts. Although the etiology of these cysts remains obscure, the cases were of interest because the cysts did not contain tumor cells despite the intimate relationship to the tumor. Metastases were localized to the ovary and were resectable. All signs and symptoms disappeared, affording excellent palliation and an extended survival.

摘要:
&NA;Usually an anal fistula has an internal (primary) opening, an external (secondary) opening, and a tract connecting the two. Uncommonly the external openings are more than one but lead to a single internal opening. Rarely more than one internal opening is present, and, along with its corresponding external opening(s), it should be considered as a separate fistula. Injection of a dye to identify the internal opening may be considered when may external openings are present.

摘要:
&NA;A patient with a hemangiopericytoma of the colon is discussed. This is the second such case reported in the English medical literature. Soon after discovery of the tumor, the patient presented with a colonic intussusception with the tumor serving as the lead point. This was reduced by a hypaque enema, but the intussusception recurred twice more, being reduced again by hypaque enema and finally having to be reduced by colonoscopy. At surgery a left hemicolectomy with primary anastomosis was performed. The microscopic, ultrastructural, and pathologic aspects of hemangiopericytoma are discussed with special attention to lesions of the gastrointestinal tract.
