摘要:
&NA;Electron microscopy of the colonic mucosa was performed in 33 patients with acute ulcerative colitis. The process of the development of crypt abscesses was studied. Inflammatory cells migrated intercellularly from the lamina propria and did not destruct the neighboring epithelial cells. Abnormal maturation of the epithelial cells was observed. Loose connection and separation of immature epithelial cells may promote migration of inflammatory cells.

摘要:
&NA;One hundred seventy‐eight patients with cancer of different segments of the colon were treated with preoperative radiation and surgery. Preoperative radiation with 25 MeV betatron was employed according to the method developed by the authors. Radiation treatment was tolerated by patients in the absence of manifest general and local reactions. No decrease below 3000 in the rate of leukocytes was observed after a total dose of up to 40 Gy. After radiotherapy, improvement in the general state was achieved in 72 percent and positive roentgenologic findings were seen in 70.8 percent of patients. The preoperative irradiation therapy was followed by 153 radical and 28 palliative operations. There was no increase in postoperative morbidity or mortality. The morphologic study of surgical specimens showed that considerable changes in the tumoral tissue, including disappearance of cancer cells, were seen in 75 percent of cases. The five‐year survival rate of 112 patients after radical surgery indicates that it is worthwhile to use the combined treatment approach for tumors located in the right colon and in cases of suspected or existing infiltration into adjacent organs and tissues.

摘要:
&NA;In searching for a suitable animal model system to study colorectal tumor‐cell metastasis, the method of injecting tumor cells directly into the spleen of athymic nude mice was explored. The cells used in this study consisted of the Colo 205 cell line, isolated and established from the ascitic fluid of a patient with adenocarcinoma of the colon. In spite of showing tumorigenicity in nude mice after subcutaneous injections, anchorage‐independent clonal growth in soft agar, and invasion in the chick embryo skin, the Colo 205 cells failed to metastasize to the lung or liver after intrasplenic injections. The effects of interferon, and interferon in combination with 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU), on tumor formation in the spleen, were studied. The combined interferon‐ and 5‐Fu‐treated animals displayed a significant difference from the controls in the generation of spleen tumors. This combination may possess potentially useful applications in the treatment of solid tumors such as those in the colon and rectum.

摘要:
&NA;Diffuse cavernous rectal hemangioma is described through a case history. Presentation, diagnostic work up, pathophysiology, and therapy for this condition are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on rectal sparing surgical techniques in the management of this disease process that affects young, otherwise healthy individuals.

摘要:
&NA;Colonoscopy may decompress a sigmoid volvulus above the reach of a rigid sigmoidoscope. Intraluminal stenting to prevent early recurrence can be accomplished using flexible plastic tubing passed over the colonoscope.

摘要:
&NA;A technique is presented that can serve as a solution for localized postoperative rectal stricture. This procedure was used after the failure of manual and instrumental dilatations. It consisted of cutting the prominent plication of the stricture, using the EEATMstapler. Five patients successfully underwent this operation without morbidity or mortality, three after very low anterior resection and two after total colectomy, mucosal proctectomy, and ileoanal anastomosis.
