&NA;The prevalence of Toxoplasma infection among patients with inflammatory bowel disease was studied. The Sabin‐Feldman dye test was performed on 35 patients with Crohn's disease, 44 patients with ulcerative colitis, and 140 control patients. A higher incidence of positive reactions was found in Crohn's disease patients over the age of 40 (P<0.05). All other factors showed no significant differences among the three groups of patients. These factors include age younger than 40 years, sex, duration of disease, extent of disease, and type of treatment. It is concluded that there is no correlation between inflammatory bowel diseases and toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasma infection, however, should be considered in patients with Crohn's disease who are over 40 years old, and who present with nonspecific signs of intercurrent infection.

&NA;The importance of diagnosis and detection of liver metastases cannot be overemphasized for the treatment and prognosis of colorectal cancers. As a new diagnostic technique, operative ultrasonography has been performed during 33 operations for colorectal cancers including three operations for metachronous liver metastases. Of these, in five patients (15.2 percent) ultrasonography using 5‐ or 7.5‐MHz instruments identified metastatic tumors that had not been diagnosed during preoperative imaging studies or at exploration. Most of these tumors were approximately 1 cm in size and nonpalpable. Cases of these five patients are presented in this report. High‐resolution operative ultrasonography is considered to be a valuable method for detection of unrecognized metastatic tumors and for precise localization and spatial assessment of these hepatic lesions. Because it is safe, simple, and highly sensitive, the routine use of operative ultrasound is encouraged during surgery upon colorectal cancers for systematic screening of metastatic liver tumors.

&NA;The involvement of the entire colon in an ischemic process is unusual because of the dual source of blood supply to the large bowel. Three cases of total ischemic colitis are presented. A precipitating cause to account for the distribution of ischemia was identified in each patient.

&NA;Two homosexual men presented with primary malignant lymphomas of the anorectum. Each patient presented with a painful mass, diagnosed by biopsy and immunologic cell marker studies. One patient, who had a reversed T4/T8 cell ratio, developed a local relapse of the tumor 11 months after radiotherapy, andPneumocystis cariniipneumonia. The other patient, with a normal T4/T8 ratio, remained lymphoma‐free and without evidence of opportunistic infection 25 months after combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy.Anorectal pathologic findings in homosexual men includes proctitis, inflammatory stricture, fissure, or anal warts. Malignant anorectal diseases, such as Kaposi's sarcoma, and cloacogenic or squamous cell carcinomas have been described in homosexual men. Primary malignant lymphoma of the anorectum is rate in both the homosexual and general populations.

&NA;Case reports of three teenage patients with nonfamilial diffuse juvenile polyposis are presented to illustrate the considerable morbidity and significant growth retardation that may occur. Although generally considered to have no malignant potential, histologic findings revealed features ranging from adenomatous change to severe dysplasia. It is suggested that a conservative approach may not always be appropriate in this condition.

&NA;Two cases of solitary rectal ulcer syndrome occurred in an 18‐year‐old woman and a 24‐year‐old man. Each had a history of bleeding on defecation, together with constipation alternating with diarrhea. In each case, a solitary rectal ulcer was noted by sigmoidoscopy and confirmed by both light and electron microscopic evaluations of biopsy material. Both clinical and pathologic features of these cases are compatible with classic rectal ulcer syndrome, which has been suggested to result from trauma followed by an ischemic event leading to fibrosis of the mucosa. Fibrosis in these two cases was confirmed by electron microscopy.
