SummaryThe case reported emphasizes the need for awareness of the possibility of ischemic proctocolitis in the patient of middle age or beyond, even when the ulcerative process is predominantly rectal and the clinical and radiographic findings are atypical. Ischemic proctocolitis may resemble ulcerative colitis radiographically, clinically, and sigmoidoscopically, especially in the early stages. A biopsy made early in the course of the disease which samples damaged mucosa should permit an easy distinction between the two processes. Farmanet al.13suggest that ischemic proctocolitis may be much more common than previously believed, particularly in the elderly, in whom underlying cardiovascular disease is common.

SummaryThis report reviews the life of George Macartney Bushe and the first American book on anorectal diseases which he wrote. Bushe'sTreatise, which was based on his literary and practical knowledge, gained the deserved recognition of American and European physicians for many decades.He left a great legacy, an outstanding book on proctology which all physicians can read with appreciation. At a time when no American doctor specialized, Bushe recognized the need for the greter broadcasting of information about anorectal diseases. His outstanding treatise advanced and spread the knowledge of proctology; hence he effectively met the lofty purpose of the American Proctologic Society.
