摘要:
&NA;John Finney was born in Natchez, Mississippi, June 20, 1863. He was the son and grandson of Presbyterian ministers. He grew up in Bel Air, Maryland, when his father assumed a position in that community. Finney attended Princeton University, received his bachelor's degree in 1884, and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1889. He then spen 18 months at the Massachusetts General Hospital before accepting a faculty position at the Johns Hopkins Medical School. He became head of the surgical dispensary, and ultimately rose to become Professor of Clinical Surgery and Surgeon‐in‐Chief. In 1910, he rejected an offer to become President of Princeton University when Woodrow Wilson left to enter politics. While developing one of the largest practices of surgery in this country, he was one of the key figures in the establishment of the Hopkins Surgical Residency Training Program. Upon the formation of the American College of Surgeons in 1913 Finney was named to be its first president. He subsequently served as president of the American Surgical Association. With the entrance of the United States into World War I, Finney went to France as director of a base hospital. He was elevated to Brigadier General, and assumed the responsibility of Chief Consultant for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. For his outstanding services to the Armies he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and the French Legion of Honor.During the early years at Hopkins, Finney contributed the paper which is reproduced here. While not an innovative surgical procedure, it represents what is believed to be the first reported case of pseudomembranous colitis. The patient developed bloody diarrhea, perhaps a consequence of enema feedings following a gastric procedure. The discussants are a Who's Who of American Medicine before the turn of the century—Halsted, Osler, Thayer, and Flexner. None, however, was moved to comment on the reasons for the patient's demise.Finney devoted his last years to numerous charitable activities and to serving on the Boards of a number of schools and universities. He died, May 30, 1942.
