摘要:
ABSTRACTIn latter 1979, approximately 200 drums of assorted waste chemicals were dumped in a rural area of southern New Jersey. The spill site is underlain by a water‐table aquifer which is the source of potable water throughout the general area. Emergency response personnel of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) began a surface cleanup soon after the dumping, and requested Department geologists to investigate the dump site.An integrated approach combining drilling and sampling, downhole logging, surface resistivity, ground‐water conductivity and laboratory analyses for the common organic solvents was used to promptly assess ground‐water contamination and the controlling hydrogeology. Using routine hydrogeologic techniques and standard field equipment, within four months the emergency spill had been assessed by Department geologists and the outlines of a ground‐water decontamination program were

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe two‐dimensional ground‐water flow model developed by Trescottet al. (1976) was used to determine several important parameters needed to compute the ground‐water flow component to and from Lake Wingra, Madison, Wisconsin; these include horizontal hydraulic conductivity (Kh), ratio of horizontal hydraulic conductivities between two layers (Kh1/Kh2), average anisotropy of the sediments in each layer (Kh/Kv), and average depth of interaction between a lake and an aquifer. In addition to gaining hydrogeologic information, the model was used successfully to estimate general geologic relationships (i.e., location and configuration of geologic contacts) in part of the northeast shore area of Lake W

摘要:
ABSTRACTWater from a newly installed well (4A) at the Canadian Forces Base, Shilo in Manitoba, Canada was reported to be producing a hydrocarbon smell and sporadic turbidity which was shown to be caused by the generation of a significant population of the bacteriumPseudomonas aureofaciens. In this investigation, the pseudomonad was isolated, identified and found to be able to degrade mineral oil (as a source of organic carbon) aerobically but was not capable of nitrate respiration or of anaerobic growth. The generation of high populations (and turbidity) ofPseudomonas aureofaciensin the well water was linked to the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water along with sufficient hydrocarbons to support growth. The maximum population recorded was 8 × 105C.F.U./ml. The origin of the hydrocarbons in the ground water was postulated to have been long‐term solvent spills from a nearby paint sh

摘要:
ABSTRACTIn two documented cases, pumping of large‐capacity, 13 to 16 l/s (200 to 250 USgpm) irrigation wells completed in fractured granodiorite of Jurassic age resulted in the occurrence of trough‐like cones of depression extending up to 1,500 m (4,900 ft) away from the pumped wells. The longitudinal axes of the drawdown troughs developed along trends coinciding with areal intersections of the two prominent bedrock joint sets prevalent in the region and bisecting the angles between the sets. The drawdown troughs appear to extend preferentially away from the pumped wells in the general direction of increasing regional potentiometric head towards local recharge areas. Occurrence of this phenomenon indicates that fracture anisotropy in this terrain has a pronounced effect on the magnitude and direction of drawdown interference about a pumped well. To be effective, several monitor wells strategically placed may be required to adequately assess drawdown interference in crystalline terrain. Although large‐capacity wells may be effective in dewatering extended narrow zones in the granitic bedrock, several closely‐spaced pumping wells sited in series normal to the regional potentiometric gradient in conjunction with monitoring of peripheral observation wells are recommended as a first step in engineering situations where dewatering a large area of this type of fractured granitic body may be

摘要:
ABSTRACTUnsteady flow to a large‐diameter well has been analyzed by a discrete kernel approach, taking well storage into consideration. The variation of drawdown with time has been obtained at the well and inside the aquifer. The validity of the new method has been verified by comparing the drawdown at the well with the drawdown given by Papadopulos and Cooper (1967). The aquifer contribution to discharge at various times has been estimate

摘要:
ABSTRACTDepositional and structural history control regional trends in transmissivity and hydraulic conductivity in Lower Cretaceous‐age sandstones along the Balcones‐Ouachita trend in north‐central Texas. Because of a scarcity of pumping tests, delineation of trends was possible only by incorporating transmissivities estimated from specific capacities. Statistical comparison of estimated and pumping‐test transmissivities confirmed the validity of this approach. The resulting contour maps should be useful in evaluating these aquifers as potential low‐temperature geothermal resources. The method can also be applied to other aquifers to facilitate ground‐water manageme

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe step‐drawdown test is frequently utilized by hydrogeologists as an aid in assessing well efficiency and approximate pumping capacity. Unfortunately, the analysis of step‐drawdown data presently requires either a solution to a system of highly nonlinear equations or the application of tenuous assumptions relative to the solution form. A method for solution is derived which does not require limiting assumptions, type‐curve methods or extensive computer facil

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe existence of high‐density, nearly‐structureless bedrock buried by relatively low‐density sediments makes gravity prospecting a very informative technique for bedrock‐topography studies of the northern Appalachian Plateaus. Locating bedrock exposures and using available well data reduces the area of the gravity search. Depths to bedrock from wells correlate excellently with depths from gravity anomalies. The minimum anomaly detected was 0·18 milligal, corresponding to a depth of approximately

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe Sabi Valley alluvial plain is the largest tract of alluvium in Zimbabwe. The ground‐water hydrology of the alluvial plain was studied by three independent methods: the classical approach of potentiometric surface construction and pump test analyses, the use of in‐borehole velocity and direction measurements with artificial radioactive isotopes applied to the point‐dilution techniques, and a natural and thermonuclear tritium survey. The three methods of approach produce remarkably close values for the ground‐water throughflow within the plain. A safe yield figure of 2.5 cubic metres/sec is currently used with confidence for the ground‐water reservoir as a result of t
