This paper surveys several domain decomposition algorithms developed for the 1-D and 2-D curvilinear SNtransport theory methods. The angular and spatial domain decomposition algorithms are incorporated into TWOTRAN-II (an SNproduction code) and the parallel performances of these algorithms are measured on the IBM 3090 multiprocessors, mainly in the ‘BATCH’ mode. The measured parallel efficiencies for most test cases are greater than 60%. Further, it is demonstrated that the combined spatial and angular domain decomposition algorithms yield tens of independent tasks without significantly affecting solution convergence.

This symposium was held May 26–28, 1992, on the campus of Moscow State University. Principal sponsors were the Russian A4cademy of Sciences (through the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics, the Institute of Numerical Mathematics, and the Institute for Mathematical Modelling), the Nuclear Society of t h e CIS, and IVIOSCOW State University. This was the fifth in a series of such symposia, and the first open t o international participation. All previous symposia had been held in Tartu, Estonia, in 1984, 198G, 1988 and 1990, under the organization of t h e Astrophysical Institute of the Estonian Academy of Sciences and Tartu State University. The principal theme of this symposium was t h e necessity of developing reliable tools for t h e mathematical modelling of radiation transport i n different applied problems, and the use of novel computer systems for these purposes. There were approximately 120 participants, including more than 20 from outside the former Soviet Union. International participants were housed in the very pleasant facilities of the Uzkoye Hotel of t h e Russian Academy of Sciences, which was approximately 30 minutes (by prearranged bus) from the symposium site.
