摘要:
Time decay for solutions to the initial-value problem for the linearized Vlasov equationis studied. HereEx= ρ= ∫gdvandf(v2) ≥ 0 is to be sufficiently smooth and strictly decreasing. The initial value forgis to be suitably smooth and small at infinity. Whenf1(v2) → 0 as |v| → ∞ at an algebraic rate, it is shown that ρ → 0 at an algebraic rate ast→ ∞ in both theL2and maximum norms. Whenfis a Gaussian, the decay rate is logarithmic. The fieldEis also shown to decay in the maximum norm for both generic classes off's. Similar results are obtained in three dimensions for spherically symmetric data. Whenfhas compact support, no decay of the density inL2(R1) is possible for data of compact support.

摘要:
The spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation with an external force and rather general boundary conditions is considered. The problem is studied of how a stochastic particle system should look in this general situation in order to reproduce a solution of the Boltzmann equation in the limit as the number of particles tends to infinity. A stochastic model is constructed that contains parameters allowing performance of asymmetric as well as fictitious collisions between the particles.

In this paper we prove the local existence of classical solutions to the Landau equations. A smallness condition on the data at infinity is required. We use the maximum principle and Bernstein's method to obtain the boundedness of solutions and an approximate scheme is given.

In spite of the fact that the scattering and albedo operators are defined in a different setting in the linear transport theory, there is a close resemblance between them. In this paper we try to explore this analogy. The scattering operator comes from the evolutionary linear transport system:and it involves a comparison of the dynamics U(t) of the above system with the dynamics U0(t) of the collisionless transport system, the so called advection system:

Recently Desvillettes proved that the solutions to the space homogeneous Boltzmann equation possess all moments, provided that the initial data have 2 + ε moments inL1. Here an alternative proof of this statement is presented, together with a proof that the result does not hold for pseudo-Maxwellian molecules. Two implications of the result are discussed: an analogousLp-result and an improved uniqueness result.

The 13th International Conference on Transport Theory (the biennial “Blacksburg Conference”) was held May 10–14, 1993, in Riccione, Italy. These meetings, which began in Blacksburg in 1969, were held there also in ‘73, ‘75, ‘77, ‘83 and ‘89. They may not return until the thirtieth anniversary year 1999, since the ‘95 meeting is scheduled for Beijing and the ‘97 meeting is tentatively scheduled for Goteborg. Stay tuned to this channel for further information-it should appear in the summary of the ‘95 conference, which will be the twelfth in the series of summaries which have been published in this journal every year since 1973. The proceedings of this conference, the second held in Italy (the first was in Montecatini Terme in 1985) will also appear in this journal, sometime in the future.
