Double Fourier transformation, the Boucher decomposition, and extensive application of contour integration in two complex variables are used to determine the unique solution to the quarter-space problem with a uniform source. Numerical calculations for a moderately absorbing quarter space are presented. Diffusion-theory results are also given for comparison.

In this paper we consider the system of integro differential Boltzmann equations that governs the multi group balance inside a finite sphere. Applying the Fourier transform method, we finally get a system of regular Fred Holm integral equations. Proceeding according to the Hilbert-Schmidt theory, we obtain for this system a solution that is strictly related to the transformed total fluxes and, through an angle-depending factor, also to the transformed angular fluxes. The solution thus obtained is then inverted to give both total and angular fluxes in the original configuration.

Case's method is applied to one-speed neutron-transport problems in multiplayer slab cells. A set of singular integral equations for the eigen-function-expansion coefficients of the angular neutron flux is derived, and two methods of solution suitable for numerical calculation are presented. In the first method the solution of the Hilbert problem is obtained in the form of power series for a coupling parameter. In the second method the singular integral equations are reduced to a set of Fred Holm's integral equations. The numerical results are given.

A small, informal conference on the above topic was held on the : ampus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University January 15–18, 1973. The invited participants consisted mainly of persons primarily interested in application of mathematical methods in transport theory and included E. Burniston and C. Siewert of North Carolina State; K. Case, Rockefeller; A. Gibbs, Battelle Northwest; H. Kaper, Argonne; A. Leonard, Stanford; J. Mika, Warsaw; T. Mullikin, Purdue; as well as L. Baird, R. Bowden, K. Hansgen, R. Jones, C. Lingus, L. Mync, S. Sancaktar and P. Zweifel of the host institution. The participants were urged to present work in progress and speculative ideas, with a view towards stimulating discussion. Most participants did exactly that; the discussions were indeed stimulating and informative. The brief report of the conference given here should thus be read as a description of work in progress, much of it still high speculative.
