摘要:
The time eigenvalue spectrum of the one-speed, isotropic scattering neutron transport equation has been studied for a homogeneous sphere with vacuum boundary conditions. There is a close relationship between the time eigenvalue problem and the criticality problem of the time independent equation for the same model. It is shown that this relation holds even when the time eigenvalues are complex. Using Carlvik's method to solve the criticality problem, it is shown that complex time eigenvalues do actually exist for this model problem. Thus the real eigenvalues found by van Norton(1)do not form the complete spectrum.

In this paper the uniform pointwise convergence of the discrete ordinate method for weak and strong solutions of the time dependent, linear transport equation posed in a multidimensional, rectangular parallelepiped with partially reflecting walls is established. The first result is that a sequence of discrete ordinate solutions converges uniformly on the quadrature points to a solution of the continuous problem provided that the corresponding sequence of truncation errors for the solution of the continuous problem converges to zero in the saw manner. The second result is that continuity of the solution with respect to the velocity variables guarantees that the truncation errors in the quadrature formula go to zero and hence that the discrete ordinate approximations converge to the solution of the continuous problem as the discrete ordinates become dense. An existence theorem for strong solutions of the continuous problem follows as a result.

In this note, a reformulation of the divergence (Landau) form of the Fokker-Planck equation in terms of the fourth order Riemann-Christoffel tensor is presented. It is shown that derivatives of the Rosenbluth potentials of no higher than second order result within the vector components on which the divergence operator acts.

A procedure commonly used to construct solutions to Maxwell's equations is to introduce a potential which itself satisfies a vector or scalar wave equation. In this connection there are three basic mathematical questions. 1) What class of initial data for the problem can be represented by a particular potential? 2) What is the precise relationship of the one-parameter group delivering solutions to the Cauchy problem for Maxwell's equations to the Cauchy problem for the wave equation that the particular potential satisfies? 3) What is the exact relation of various potentials to one another?
