摘要:
The differential neutron flux in slab geometry can be represented as a linear combination of traveling eigenmodes that propagate with exponential decay as functions of distance. The operators that serve to analyze the flux into mode amplitudes and to synthesize the flux from the mode amplitudes are determined. The particular analyzers and synthesizers it is appropriate to use in any given situation depend on the boundary conditions. These operators have an interpretation independent of any particular problem. The fluxes of interest can be written down almost by inspection in terms of these operators.

摘要:
A variational method specially suited to neutron problems in small assemblies of coherent scatterers is described. The trial function used is a linear combination of a Maxwellian and exact solutions of the eigenvalue equation for two chosen values of buckling. This method accounts rather accurately for the sharp variations in the asymptotic neutron-energy spectrum (which arise because of discontinuities in the values of total scattering and transport cross sections) and also gives very accurate values for the fundamental mode-decay constant. As examples we have considered the decay of a neutron pulse in beryllium, beryllium oxide, and ice.

摘要:
The sound problem in plane geometry is solved under the assumption of no intermolecular collisions and for arbitrary gas-surface scattering kernels, first disregarding any interference from the detector and then with full account of the interreflections. In the latter case the phase lag is found to behave like s log s for small widths of the gap between transmitter and detector. Expansions derived for idealized cases show that measurements of transmitted sound hold little promise of yielding significant information about the gas-surface interaction. Such a goal is better approached by studying the reaction to the transmitter (e.g., by observing the damping of a freely vibrating elastic reed), whereby the normal-momentum accommodation coefficient could be determined.

摘要:
The critical problem for a finite reactor system is formulated in the framework of the multigroup approximation. Under the condition that the system has spectrum-regenerated properties it is proved that the critical problem to the multigroup transport equation has a unique solution. This solution is nonnegative and essentially bounded everywhere.
