AbstractOur investigation into the use of ion exchange resin-formic acid combination as an alternative method to other acidextraction procedures is reported. The bone specimens tested were selected from rat and mouse sternums, nasal cavities and ankles. After demineralization, they were routinely stained with hematoxylin and eosin and examined by light microscopy. The results with the resin-formic acid combination showed better tinctorial patterns, good preservation of cellular structures, and excellent definition of nuclear details.

AbstractA microwave oven was used in the silver-staining of histologic sections from the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. The technique quickly and reliably stained both senile plaques and neurofibrillary change in parafin-embedded tissue, providing a method with significant advantages in time, expense, and histologic detail over the traditional silver method performed on frozen sections.

AbstractAn avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) immunoperoxidase technique for the demonstration ofLegionella Pneumophila, Serogroup1 was grown on charcoal yeast extract (CYE) media, harvested, smeared on glass slides, air dried and heat fixed. The smears were then stained with the ABC technique and contained large numbers of well stained organisms.

AbstractA new type of diamine silver stain is described. The staining solution can be prepared (volumetrically) from stable solutions, and the method can be completed in two hours. Fine connective fibers were stained black, but as their size increased, they were stained reddish black. Larger connective fibers were stained red. Fungi were stained black to grey black.
