摘要:
AbstractA machine is described that will decalcify bone through the use of electrolysis, and can easily be constructed from materials that are available from major medical supply companies. When properly used, all sizes of bone can quickly be decalcified without destruction of tissues or the loss of staining qualities of the prepared slide. All materials necessary for the construction of this machine and the procedure for its use are described.

摘要:
AbstractAn investigation, primarily of the stock Congo red solution for the staining of amyloid, was made. It was found that some samples of Congo red contained a second component which was only slightly soluble in NaCl ethanol. This made definition of- a saturated solution impossible. However, 50 mg Congo red in 50 ml of NaCl ethanol mechanically stirred for 15 minutes, then adding 0.5 ml 1% NaOH and filtering and staining in this solution for 20 minutes, gave an adequate stain for amyloid.

AbstractHolding rat CNS tissues in 70% alcohol for 48 hours produces artifactual vacuoles in the white matter. Holding tissues in automatic tissue processors for this length of time for weekend run is routine in some laboratories.

摘要:
AbstractA modified technique for the preservation of ligaments during decalcification of large bone-ligament complexes for histologic examination was developed. Afteren-blocexcision of the bone-ligament complex from the cadaver specimen, the bones are trimmed and the cancellous bone is removed using a dental drill bit. The specimens are decalcified in 5% formic acid and sectioned. Required decalcification time is minimized by removing extraneous mineralized tissue. Histologic examination reveals minimal disruption of the ligaments and their insertions in specimens prepared using this technique.
