The life and work of Waldemar M. Haffkine are drawn upon the background of his times at the turn of the nineteenth century, and in relation to the state of knowledge which prevailed in the fields of bacteriology, immunology and public health in those days. His formative years in Russia, the early studies on cholera at the Pasteur Institut in Paris, and his subsequent missions to India are portrayed in the light of his own scientific and spiritual aspirations and through the elements of chance and challenge which the great pandemics of cholera and plague posed to the dedicated scientific mind. Haffkine's pioneer work in devising methods for active immunization against cholera and plague have earned him the respect and esteem of his peers; and the selfless dedication and perseverance which he showed in his long and arduous field campaign of vaccination among the vast populations of the Indian subcontinent gained him their trust, their love and admiration.

The effects of six different modes of therapy on arterial pH, pCO2pO2and pulmonary function tests were measured in 18 patients with asthma. No uniformly predictable outcome was observed with any of the treatment programs. Improved values were best sustained with epinephrine and aminophylline. All patients had hypoxia initially prior to therapy with arterial oxygen tensions ranging from 38 to 75 mm Hg. In some patients the arterial pO2worsened as a result of treatment with decreases ranging from 1 to 25 mm Hg. It is concluded that all patients with acute asthma should receive oxygen therapy initially and throughout their course of treatment with bronchodilators.

Detailed chromosomal analyses of eight patients with an acute blastic crisis (ABC) of chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML) who had two (diplo) or three (triplo) Philadelphia (Ph1) chromosomes showed all patients have marked aneuploidy. Seven were hyperdiploid and one hypodiploid. The mechanism involved in the chromosomal abnormalities, other than the Ph1chromosome was thought due to nondisjunction in mitosis. The most simple explanation for the nondisjunction would be that it occurs more frequently in cells which are already chromosomally imbalanced.

Alopecia is a well recognized manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and it was found to occur in 58.5 per cent of 176 SLE patients prospectively studied. More characteristic although less frequent was shortening of the frontal hair which was described and termed “lupus hair” by Armas-Cruz and his coworkers. Although confirmed by others, this sign has been little recognized. Inasmuch as it was found in 30 per cent of our 176 patients, when present it may be an important clue to the diagnosis of SLE.

A unique case of an adult with polymicrobic septic arthritis is described. The patient had the simultaneous isolation of anaerobes and unusual facultative aerobes from two soft tissue abscesses and a noncontiguous joint. It is assumed that the source of the microorganisms was the intestinal tract and that hematogenous dissemination following trauma had occurred. There are only twelve other cases of well-documented acute polymicrobic pyarthrosis in the adult in the English literature.
