摘要:
ABSTRACTSinigrin and mustard oils were identified in the pupae of the large white butterfly (Pieris brassicae) and the small white (P. rapae). It is assumed that these substances are sequestered by the larvae from its foodplant and stored. The large white is apparently the more efficient storer of the two, and mustard oils could be detected in the adults, as well as the larvae.

摘要:
ABSTRACTDiel changes in seven behavioural responses of male tsetse flies,G.morsitans, were measured under controlled conditions in the laboratory. These responses involved different motor and sensory modalities, and were evoked by stimuli that were either exogenously applied at regular intervals or were ever‐present. Six (possibly seven) of the responses were modulated across the photophase (of LD12: 12) in the V‐pattern typical of biting behaviour in the field: morning and evening responses were greatest, noon least. Two of these rhythms were shown to persist in constant conditions, indicating that the underlying control is truly circadian.Comparison of the form of an optokinetic response rhythm at high and low stimulus intensities, implied central control of the response modulation. This, plus the close similarity in phase of the different rhythms, is interpreted as indicating circadian changes in central excitatory state (arousal) as the underlying neurophysiological basis of behavioural rhythmicity. It is suggested that the sarrie arousal system controls the comparable, longer and shorter term changes in excitability that result from starvation, sex,

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe chitin architecture of Mecoptera cuticle is of two kinds: helicoidal and helicoidal preferred with the preferred layers being cross‐plied. Comparison of both systems of terminology currently in use to differentiate the subtypes of cuticle indicates that neither provides much information about the arrangement of chitin within cuticle and that both give information only about the extent of hardening in cuticle. All of the specimens of solid cuticle broken in tension exhibited a similar fracture behaviour in which the exocuticle failed in a brittle manner and the endocuticle failed plastically. The mode of endocuticular failure is dependent upon the arrangement of chitin microfibres within this region. The ultrastructural patterns of chitin microfibres determined by electron microscopy cannot be related to current notions about the phylogenetic interrelationships among Mecoptera and the usefulness of chitin fibre arrangement as a phylogenetic tool remains an open questio

摘要:
ABSTRACTLarvae of the flesh‐flySarcophaga argyrostomawere raised in short‐day cycles (LD12: 12) and at temperatures (18° and 20°C) in which short‐day induction of pupal diapause was less than ‘saturated’. The cultures were then subjected to experimental treatments which modified the duration of larval development (the sensitive period). Overcrowding the larvae within a limited quantity of meat, premature extraction of the third instar larvae from their food, or exposure of the mature larvae to pure CO2for 24 h, were all found to accelerate puparium formation, thereby curtailing the sensitive period, and reducing the incidence of pupal diapause. Conversely, lengthening the sensitive period by allowing the mature larvae to wander in wet sawdust increased diapause incidence. The results are interpreted in terms of an interaction between the length of the sensitive period and the ‘required day number’, and also in the light of what is known about the endocrinological control of diapause and development

摘要:
ABSTRACTPapilio demoleuslarvae showed maximum attraction to odours of citral, cirtonellal and citronellol, slightly less to geraniol and 1‐limonene, and low attraction to hydroxy‐citronellal and geranyl acetate. These chemicals (except the last) are the main odorous constituents of the insect's host plant (Citrus) leaves. Phellandrene was almost inert, whereas farnesol and d‐limonene elicited a low, and linalool, eugenol and clove oil a high repulsion.Larvae deprived of one antenna and both maxillary palps were similar to normal larvae in their orientational responses. Normal larval responses changed with the inactivation of one or more of the three specific antennal sensilla. A full complement of the three sensilla was not essential for the normal larval response to certain chemicals. Any of the sensilla singly or in combination with any other sensillum could mediate the normal larval response (attraction) to citral and geraniol. For a few other chemicals, certain specific sensilla, singly or in a combination of two, mediated the normal response. Only for d‐limonene were all three sensilla essential for the normal r

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe outer chorionic sculpturing of the eggs of thirteen species of neotropical sandflies was examined by scanning electron microscope. Sculpture patterns are species specific and include polygons, parallel ridges and mountain or volcano‐like structures. Two closely related and undescribed species of theintermediagroup were distinguished by this means. The role of sculpturing in plastron respiration is discusse
