SummarySuch considerations as those mentioned, if spread by the optometrist, will go far toward making communities more conscious of one of the highest functions of the human eye in any advanced civilisation—to read efficiently. When we consider the vast and marvellous construction of the human eye, with its rods and cones for receiving and transmitting the stimuli of light, the wonderful dioptric machinery of transparent cornea, lens, and humors, the elastic lens with the ciliary muscle for focusing, the iris with its intrinsic muscles for controlling the amount of light coming from objects at various distances, and its other adjuncts, we can appreciate Darwin's frame of mind when he said that he never thought of attempting to explain the origin of the human eye without a shudder. Working in conjunction with this highly complex organ is the big brain, that intricate organ of interpretation.
