摘要:
The Malawi Government first computerized its foreign trade statistics system in 1966. The paper traces the history of the development of the system since then and describes its current state, a disc‐based COBOL system running on ICL ME29 machines.

摘要:
A general Sales Tax was introduced into Mauritius in January 1983. The paper describes a computer system developed for the administration of this tax. The system is written in COBOL and, in the interests of simplicity, is designed for batch processing. There is a note on training of the personnel involved and on future developments.

摘要:
As long ago as 1967 Kenya Railways decided to embark on a long term project to design and implement a computer‐based system for control of its stock of some 10,000 goods wagons. Large financial savings were expected to result from the increased operational efficiency that would be achieved. The first phase of the project, providing a continuous full record of the location, movement and state (e.g. full or empty, details of load, operational or under maintenance) has been in operation since 1971. The paper describes the system, indicates the resources that were needed for its construction and implementation and notes briefly the future developments that are planned.

摘要:
The installation of a 2‐unit microcomputer system in Somalia is described. Though not unique, the system does illustrate some important factors which must be considered when installing computers in extreme conditions.

摘要:
The paper gives a detailed account of the motivation for and the design and implementation of a computer‐based system for managing the water resources in Thailand. The problems and difficulties encountered are discussed and lessons are drawn which can help to guide such undertakings in the future.

摘要:
The Kalutara Project was initiated in 1983 with the objective of developing an information system for decentralized planning at the District level and for promoting application of advanced information technology at sub‐national levels of government. The Project will develop a village‐level database at the District, primarily using data collected by the Department of Census and Statistics. Data from specific surveys, and administrative information generated by other agencies, will be integrated with this general information system to cater for the needs of local planners and administrators. Three applications in management and office routine, for Pension Payment, Project Monitoring and Revenue Accounting respectively, have been developed and are in operation. A geo‐coding system has been developed to present planning information on a spatial basis. The system is supported by the ESCAP, the UNESCO and the Sri Lankan Government; one microcomputer has been donated by the French Government. The Project is managed by District staff, with some technical support from the central agencies.
